Job Description

Software Engineer – DER & OEM Integrations (Java / Azure / CleanTech)

Location: Remote / Santa Clara, CA

Employment Type: Full-Time

About the Role

We are seeking a Software Engineer to build and maintain scalable, cloud-based integrations with Distributed Energy Resource (DER) manufacturers and technology providers. In this role, you will design microservices that connect directly to OEM APIs to collect, normalize, and monitor live telemetry from batteries, solar inverters, smart meters, and EV chargers.

What You’ll Do

  • API Integration: Design, develop, and maintain Java & Spring Boot microservices that integrate with OEM platforms (batteries, solar, inverters, gateways).

  • Data Pipelines & Normalization: Ingest streaming telemetry (power, energy, voltage, SoC) and normalize disparate OEM payloads into a unified internal data model.

  • Resiliency Engineering: Build systems to handle rate limits, intermittent connectivity, network timeouts, retries, and automated telemetry quality checks.

  • Cloud Architecture: Deploy and monitor containerized applications using Docker and Kubernetes within Microsoft Azure.

  • Domain Problem-Solving: Interpret power flows across solar, battery, grid, and load topologies (accounting for AC-coupled vs. DC-coupled systems).

What We’re Looking For

  • Core Tech: Strong background in Java, Spring Boot, and RESTful APIs.

  • Streaming & Cloud: Practical experience with event-streaming (Apache Kafka or Azure Event Hubs) and Azure Cloud.

  • Containers & CI/CD: Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and GitHub Actions / CI/CD.

  • Modern Tooling: Comfort using AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude, Codex) to accelerate workflow.

  • Industry Experience (Huge Plus): Prior background in CleanTech, Solar, Energy Storage, Smart Grid, or EV OEM platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain Java and Spring Boot services that integrate with OEM APIs for batteries, solar systems, inverters, meters, gateways, and related DER equipment.
  • Collect and process telemetry such as power, energy, state of charge, voltage, current, operating status, alarms, and device connectivity.
  • Normalize data from different OEMs into a consistent internal telemetry model.
  • Design and maintain RESTful APIs and services for exchanging data with OEM platforms and internal systems.
  • Handle API rate limits, pagination, retries, timeouts, token refresh, backfills, and intermittent OEM availability.
  • Develop automated data-quality checks to identify missing, delayed, stale, duplicated, or invalid telemetry.
  • Investigate discrepancies between OEM portals, APIs, meters, and internal systems.
  • Understand and correctly interpret power flow across solar, battery, grid, load, and inverter components.
  • Account for differences between AC-coupled and DC-coupled systems when interpreting device telemetry.
  • Deploy, operate, and troubleshoot containerized applications using Docker and Kubernetes in Azure cloud environments.
  • Build monitoring, logging, alerting, and operational dashboards for OEM integrations and telemetry-processing services.
  • Use GitHub for source control, pull requests, code reviews, automated testing, and CI/CD workflows.
  • Apply software engineering best practices, including object-oriented design, unit and integration testing, secure coding, and maintainable application architecture.

Required Qualifications

  • Professional software development experience using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Experience designing, developing, and integrating RESTful APIs and distributed services.
  • Experience with event-streaming or messaging technologies such as Apache Kafka and Azure Event Hubs.
  • Experience developing and deploying applications in Microsoft Azure.
  • Hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience using GitHub or similar Git-based platforms for source control, collaboration, and CI/CD.
  • Knowledge of microservices, event-driven architectures, asynchronous processing, and distributed-system design principles.
  • Experience with automated testing, application monitoring, logging, and production troubleshooting.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document technical systems and collaborate across teams.
  • Experienced in coding using AI agents such as Claude, Cursor or Codex.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience integrating with OEM, IoT, energy-management, or device-telemetry platforms.
  • Knowledge of distributed energy resources, including batteries, solar systems, inverters, meters, and gateways.
  • Familiarity with Azure services used for application hosting, messaging, monitoring, security, and data processing.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation, observability platforms, and cloud-native CI/CD practices.
