Platform Engineer

Position Overview

We are seeking a Senior VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) / Infrastructure Engineer to support and engineer a large-scale enterprise private cloud environment. This position is responsible for the operational execution, platform engineering, lifecycle management, automation, capacity optimization, modernization, and continuous improvement of the VMware Cloud Foundation platform.

The ideal candidate will have recent, hands-on experience owning and engineering VMware Cloud Foundation 5.x or later in a large enterprise environment. This includes direct experience with VCF lifecycle management, upgrades, migrations, platform health, capacity management, SDDC Manager, vSphere, vSAN, NSX-T, automation, and infrastructure-as-code.

This is a VMware Cloud Foundation platform engineering role, not primarily a network or NSX engineering position. Candidates should demonstrate direct ownership of the broader VCF platform in their recent work history.

Required Qualifications

VMware Cloud Foundation — Core Requirement

• 3+ years of recent, hands-on VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) experience in a large enterprise environment.
• Hands-on experience with VCF 5.x or later is required.
• Demonstrated experience with direct ownership and administration of the VCF platform, including platform health, capacity, troubleshooting, lifecycle management, and operational support.
• Hands-on experience with VCF lifecycle management, including:
  • VCF deployments and configuration
  • SDDC Manager
  • Platform upgrades and patching
  • Component lifecycle management
  • Compatibility and upgrade-readiness validation
  • Lifecycle remediation
  • Upgrade troubleshooting
• Experience planning and executing VCF upgrades, migrations, and modernization initiatives.
• Strong hands-on experience across the core VCF stack, including:
  • VMware vSphere / ESXi
  • vCenter
  • vSAN
  • NSX-T
  • SDDC Manager
• Experience troubleshooting issues across the VCF platform as a whole, including interactions between compute, storage, networking, management, and lifecycle components.
• Experience supporting VCF across multiple environments and/or sites within a large enterprise.
• Recent experience with current VMware/Broadcom technologies and operational practices. Legacy VMware experience alone is not sufficient.

VMware & Virtualization

• 5+ years of experience with the VMware virtualization platform and core technologies, including:
  • vSphere / ESXi
  • vCenter
  • vSAN
  • NSX-T
• 3+ years of experience with additional VMware technologies, including:
  • VMware Cloud Foundation
  • SDDC Manager
  • vROPS / Aria Operations
  • vRLI / Aria Operations for Logs
  • vRNI / Aria Operations for Networks

  • Lifecycle Manager (LCM)
  • VMware Aria Suite
• 3+ years of experience with additional hypervisor platforms such as Microsoft Hyper-V and Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV).

Enterprise Infrastructure

• 5+ years of experience supporting enterprise server hardware platforms, including HPE and Dell.
• 5+ years of experience deploying and managing operating systems within a Microsoft Active Directory environment, including:
  • Windows Server
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
  • Vendor-supplied appliances
• 3+ years of experience with high-availability and enterprise storage technologies, including:
  • SAN
  • RDMs / Shared VMDKs
  • Clustered storage
  • Windows and SQL Server clustering
  • Network Load Balancers
• 3+ years of experience with enterprise infrastructure management tools, including:
  • HPE OneView
  • Dell OpenManage
  • Red Hat Satellite

• 3+ years of experience supporting multiple hardware and operating system platforms.

Automation & Infrastructure as Code

• 3+ years of hands-on experience with PowerShell and PowerCLI scripting.
• Experience automating VMware/VCF infrastructure and operational processes.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation technologies such as:
  • Ansible Automation Platform
  • Terraform
  • PowerShell
  • PowerCLI
  • CI/CD pipelines
• Experience automating VM provisioning, configuration, compliance remediation, host builds, lifecycle management, and operational workflows.

Networking & Security

• Strong understanding of enterprise networking concepts, including:
  • Gateways and subnets
  • Firewalls
  • Active Directory / DNS
  • Infoblox DNS
  • NSX-T Distributed Firewall (DFW)
  • Security tags
  • VM-level micro-segmentation
• Experience supporting networking and security requirements within a VMware/VCF environment.
• Strong NSX-T experience is valuable; however, NSX/networking expertise alone does not substitute for direct VCF platform experience.

Key Responsibilities

VMware Cloud Foundation Platform Engineering

• Own and support the operational health, performance, availability, and capacity of a large-scale VMware Cloud Foundation private cloud platform.
• Administer, maintain, and enhance VCF 5.x or later, including SDDC Manager, vSphere/ESXi, vCenter, vSAN, NSX-T, and related platform components.
• Perform and coordinate VCF lifecycle management activities, including platform upgrades, patching, component upgrades, compatibility validation, and remediation.
• Plan and execute VCF upgrades while validating dependencies, capacity, compatibility, and operational readiness.
• Troubleshoot complex issues involving multiple VCF components and infrastructure layers.
• Maintain platform standards and operational procedures across multiple environments.

VCF Modernization & Migration

• Execute and coordinate VM and cloud modernization initiatives within the VCF environment.
• Support workload migration and replication transitions, including environments with federation enabled.
• Perform capacity assessments and validate infrastructure readiness prior to migration activities.
• Support JSON configuration conversions and validation as required for modernization activities.
• Execute migration and modernization pipelines and maintain associated runbooks and procedures.
• Coordinate with application and infrastructure teams to minimize risk and maintain delivery timelines.

Capacity Management & VM Optimization

• Execute VM right-sizing initiatives in coordination with application teams.
• Perform OS-level resource validation and coordinate approval workflows.
• Track VM optimization progress through dashboards and operational reporting.
• Maintain and enhance capacity analytics, dashboards, baseline metrics, and reporting.
• Identify infrastructure capacity trends and optimization opportunities to support strategic planning.

Infrastructure Operations

• Track and coordinate platform initiatives including:
  • Host upgrades
  • Security patches
  • Appliance deployments
  • Appliance upgrades
  • Infrastructure remediation
  • Upgrade-readiness validation
• Support platform health and operational stability across development, test, sandbox, and production environments.
• Coordinate with peer engineers and technical teams to resolve platform issues and deliver infrastructure initiatives.

Automation & Infrastructure as Code

• Develop, maintain, and enhance automation for:
  • VCF/VMware platform operations
  • Compliance remediation
  • Host build processes
  • VM provisioning
  • Infrastructure configuration
  • Lifecycle management
  • Operational workflows
• Develop PowerShell and PowerCLI automation and integrate automation into pipelines.
• Leverage Ansible, Terraform, and CI/CD technologies to improve infrastructure consistency and reduce manual operational effort.
• Identify repetitive operational activities and convert them into reliable, repeatable automated workflows.

Sandbox & Proof-of-Concept Environments

• Create, maintain, and decommission purpose-built VMs and Sandbox environments used for:
  • Proof-of-concept initiatives
  • VCF upgrade-path testing
  • Security hardening validation
  • Vendor fixes and updates
  • Infrastructure changes
• Assist peer engineers with POC projects and validate vendor-provided fixes, updates, and security findings before production implementation.
• Document test results, findings, and recommendations.

Azure DevOps & Operational Management

• Maintain Azure DevOps boards, backlogs, dashboards, and delivery metrics.
• Support a hybrid delivery model using Kanban for infrastructure operations and Agile practices for automation and development.
• Maintain ADO board hygiene and ensure work is accurately tracked through completion.
• Maintain baseline metrics and reporting to support project execution and delivery commitments.

Documentation & Knowledge Management

• Create, peer review, and maintain technical documentation, including:
  • Automation runbooks
  • Operational procedures
  • Infrastructure playbooks
  • Upgrade procedures
  • Migration documentation
  • Onboarding materials
• Standardize operational processes to reduce tribal knowledge dependencies.
• Create documentation and repeatable processes that support future AI-assisted and agentic infrastructure operations.
• Share knowledge and best practices with peer engineers and broader infrastructure teams.

The strongest candidate will be able to demonstrate recent, hands-on VCF ownership in their actual work history rather than simply listing VMware Cloud Foundation as a skill.

Strong NSX/networking experience is a plus, but this position requires broader VMware Cloud Foundation platform expertise. Candidates whose VMware background is primarily network/NSX-focused or limited to legacy vSphere environments will not be considered a strong match.
