About the Role
Our client, a leading Fortune 50 retailer with a large-scale omnichannel commerce platform, is seeking a Senior Backend Software Engineer to join its Tax Technology organization. This team develops and supports the technology solutions that calculate, manage, report, and ensure compliance with tax and fee obligations across a complex enterprise environment.
In this role, you will help build and modernize systems that support high-volume transaction processing across stores, digital commerce, procurement, finance, and other enterprise platforms. The ideal candidate is a strong backend engineer with expertise in Kotlin, distributed systems, and modern cloud-native application development.

Job Description
As a Senior Backend Software Engineer, you will work within an Agile development team to design, build, deploy, and support scalable applications and services that power critical financial and tax-related business processes.
Responsibilities
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and backlog refinement.
  • Design, develop, test, and deploy new application features and enhancements.
  • Build and maintain scalable backend services and web-based applications.
  • Develop and support RESTful APIs and event-driven integrations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional technology and business teams to deliver reliable financial processing solutions.
  • Support production applications and troubleshoot issues in a complex enterprise environment.
  • Contribute to the modernization and migration of legacy applications and services.
  • Write high-quality, maintainable, and testable code following engineering best practices.
  • Participate in code reviews and CI/CD-driven development processes.
  • Help ensure platform stability, performance, and scalability for high-volume transaction systems.
Qualifications
Required
  • Professional experience developing backend applications using Kotlin.
  • Experience building applications with Spring Boot.
  • Experience designing, developing, and supporting RESTful APIs.
  • Experience with Kafka or other event-driven messaging technologies.
  • Experience working with PostgreSQL or other relational database platforms.
  • Experience developing scalable, distributed, and highly available applications.
  • Experience creating and maintaining unit tests, integration tests, and testable software designs.
  • Experience using Git, source control best practices, and CI/CD deployment pipelines.
  • Experience supporting production applications in an Agile development environment.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud-native application architectures.
  • Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and collaboration skills.
Preferred
  • Experience developing applications with Java.
  • Additional experience with PostgreSQL database administration or optimization.
  • Exposure to React for UI enhancements and support activities.
  • Experience working within financial systems, accounting platforms, tax systems, or enterprise transaction-processing environments.
  • Experience supporting large-scale retail, e-commerce, or high-volume transaction platforms.
  • Familiarity with modern application modernization initiatives and cloud transformation efforts.
