Job Description

Infrastructure Engineer

Inside IR35, 500 P/D

Active SC would be advantageous

Predominately remote

6 month contract, scope to extend

Overview

We are looking for an Infrastructure Engineer to support a large-scale programme moving applications and services from legacy into cloud and managed hosting environments.

The work is hands-on and delivery focused, with an emphasis on safe, structured migration and minimal disruption to live services. This is a transition role rather than a cloud transformation position, with engineers working within established migration approaches and patterns.

What You'll Do

  • Support the migration of applications and services from legacy applications into target hosting environments.
  • Apply established migration approaches and patterns to individual services.
  • Support service discovery, dependency mapping and environment readiness.
  • Work across development, test and production environments to coordinate migration activity.
  • Complete infrastructure and configuration changes required to support migration.
  • Help re-establish and validate connectivity, including network, firewall and service dependencies.
  • Support rehearsals, cutovers, smoke testing and post-migration validation.
  • Identify risks, support mitigations and contribute to rollback planning where required.
  • Collaborate with architects, application teams, platform teams, security specialists and service SMEs to unblock delivery.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Strong infrastructure engineering or systems-administration background with hands-on delivery experience.
  • Experience supporting application, infrastructure or hosting migrations.
  • Solid understanding of Linux and/or Windows systems, networking and environment configuration.
  • Ability to work across multiple environments and apply controlled change safely.
  • Experience supporting live services in complex enterprise environments.
  • Experience troubleshooting infrastructure, configuration and connectivity issues.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively across technical teams.
  • Pragmatic and delivery focused, with the ability to work with legacy technology and incomplete information.

Desirable

  • Cloud infrastructure experience.
  • Experience supporting large-scale hosting migration programmes.
  • Exposure to Infrastructure as Code, such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
  • CI/CD pipeline experience, such as GitLab, Jenkins or Bamboo.
  • Scripting skills using Bash, Python or PowerShell.
  • Experience with VMware or comparable virtualisation platforms.
  • Understanding of DNS, routing, firewalls, load balancing and secure connectivity.
  • Exposure to legacy application-hosting technologies, middleware or databases.
  • Experience of migration rehearsals, production cutovers, rollback and early-life support.
  • Current or transferable security clearance.

What We're Looking For

  • Delivery focus: gets services moved safely and at pace.
  • Pragmatic mindset: works effectively with existing systems rather than seeking to redesign them.
  • Good judgement under pressure, particularly around risk and controlled change.
  • Comfortable operating across multiple teams and mixed legacy environments.
  • Willing to complete detailed, transactional migration work including configuration, validation and documentation.
  • Positive team player who contributes to a strong engineering culture.
