Job Title: Java Developer with Banking Experience

Location: Fully Remote (Occasional travel to East Coast offices for key milestones)

Job Description:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Full-Stack Java Migration Developer to lead a major modernization initiative for our core enterprise application. In this role, you will head the technical execution of upgrading our internal legacy infrastructure to Java 21 and Spring Framework 6.x, while systematically refactoring and migrating legacy Apache Struts code to modern Spring architectures.

This role requires a modernization specialist who leverages automation tooling like Open Rewrite and AI-assisted development tools like Claude Code to deliver secure, performant, and clean code transformations.

• Core Mission: Deconstruct a legacy J2EE footprint and rebuild it into a containerized, cloud-ready Spring 6 ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

• Framework Migration & Refactoring: Systematically migrate monolithic legacy Apache Struts MVC architectures to Spring 6.x (Spring Boot 3.x / Spring MVC), eliminating technical debt.
• Java Platform Upgrade: Upgrade application codebase, dependencies, and syntax from legacy Java versions to Java 21, ensuring compatibility with modern language features and virtual threads (Project Loom).
• Automated Modernization: Design, execute, and troubleshoot automated code refactoring recipes using OpenRewrite to scale the migration efficiently.
• Server Migration: Transition applications from traditional IBM WebSphere Application Server configurations to optimized Open Liberty environments.
• Containerization: Package migrated microservices and applications into Docker containers, optimizing images for enterprise deployment.
• Database Optimization: Maintain integrity and optimize performance for underlying Oracle DB schemas, updating legacy persistence layers (e.g., raw JDBC or older Hibernate) to modern Spring Data JPA.
• AI-Assisted Engineering: Actively use modern developer tooling like Claude Code or GitHub Copilot to accelerate code translation, testing, and documentation.

Required Technical Skills

• Java Expertise: Deep engineering experience with Core Java, with strong familiarity with Java 21 features (Record patterns, pattern matching, switch expressions, and concurrent processing).
• Framework Transition: Proven track record with Apache Struts (1.x or 2.x) and extensive mastery of the Spring Framework 6.x ecosystem (Spring Boot 3.x, Spring Security, Spring Data).
• Application Servers: Hands-on experience configuring, deploying, and managing applications inside IBM WebSphere and WebSphere Application Server Liberty (Open Liberty).
• Automation Tools: Practical, hands-on experience utilizing OpenRewrite (or similar AST-based refactoring engines) to execute bulk code upgrades.
• Containerization: Strong knowledge of Docker, including writing multi-stage Dockerfiles and containerizing J2EE workloads.
• Database Layer: Advanced SQL capabilities with Oracle DB, including schema refactoring, performance tuning, and stored procedure analysis.
• Build Systems: Advanced dependency management and build pipeline configuration using Maven.

Preferred Qualifications & "Nice-to-Haves"

• AI Dev Tools: Direct, practical experience leveraging Claude Code or advanced LLM workflows to parse legacy codebases and generate Spring-equivalent components.
• Legacy Modernization Experience: Background in heavy J2EE / Jakarta EE application upgrades, including migrating EJB components, legacy web services, or monolithic architectures.
• Testing Rigor: Experience establishing test coverage baselines during migrations using JUnit 5, Mockito, and automated integration testing tools to guarantee zero functional regressions.
