Business Analyst – Portfolio Construction & Tax-Efficient Investing

Location: Remote
Duration: 6-Month Contract

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Business Analyst to join an Agile team supporting a Portfolio Management Technology organization. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in portfolio construction, portfolio optimization, and tax-efficient investing, along with hands-on experience writing detailed user stories and acceptance criteria for technology solutions used by portfolio managers.

This is a business-focused role requiring deep investment management knowledge rather than project management or operations experience.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Portfolio Managers, Product Owners, and Engineering teams to gather and analyze business requirements.
  • Translate business needs into detailed user stories, acceptance criteria, and functional requirements.
  • Support the design and enhancement of portfolio construction and optimization capabilities.
  • Define business requirements for portfolio constraints, objective functions, and rebalancing logic.
  • Work on tax-efficient investing initiatives including tax-loss harvesting, wash sale rules, tax lot management, direct indexing, and tax-managed investment strategies.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including backlog refinement, sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Validate delivered functionality against business requirements.
  • Perform data analysis using SQL or Python to support business decisions and requirement validation.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of Business Analyst experience within Investment Management, Asset Management, or Wealth Management.
  • Strong understanding of portfolio construction and optimization concepts, including:
    • Portfolio constraints
    • Objective functions
    • Turnover limits
    • Position bounds
    • Sector caps
    • Tracking error budgets
    • Portfolio rebalancing
  • Experience with tax-efficient portfolio management, including:
    • Tax-loss harvesting
    • Wash sale rules
    • Tax lot management
    • Direct indexing
    • Tax-managed Separately Managed Accounts (SMAs)
  • Proven experience writing detailed user stories and acceptance criteria in Agile environments.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Hands-on experience with SQL or Python for business analysis is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with OCIO or discretionary investment management.
  • Knowledge of portfolio management technology platforms.
  • Familiarity with portfolio optimization models and investment analytics.
  • Experience supporting Agile software development teams within investment or wealth management organizations.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with portfolio optimization engines.
  • Knowledge of modern portfolio theory, tracking error, and portfolio risk concepts.
  • Exposure to tax-aware investment strategies and personalized indexing solutions.

Note: Candidates with backgrounds primarily in Program Management, Delivery Management, System Migration, Investment Operations, Fund Accounting, Trade Support, QA/UAT, Financial Advisory, or IT Portfolio Management are not a fit for this role.
