Structural Inspector

About the Position

We’re seeking a Structural Inspector to support large, complex heavy civil infrastructure programs, including highways, roads, and bridges delivered through both traditional and alternative delivery methods. You’ll inspect structure work against Caltrans standards and the approved contract documents, and keep a clear, defensible record of the work. Hands-on experience with CIDH piles (drilled shafts) and retaining walls is required.

This is a long-term, full-time, on-site position located in the greater Los Angeles metro area, with an anticipated start date in January 2027. Construction runs during night and weekend closures, so regular night and weekend shifts are part of the job.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Inspect roadway concrete structures, including but not limited to cast-in-place/prestressed concrete box girder bridges, precast girder bridges, soil nail and ground anchor walls.
• Inspect CIDH pile construction for walls, soundwalls, and sign structure foundations, from drilling and bottom cleaning through cage and concrete placement and confirm integrity testing is complete before the pile is accepted.
• Verify excavation, footing preparation, reinforcing steel details, formwork, drainage, and backfill before each pour, and inspect concrete placement.
• Coordinate structure work with roadway excavation, embankment, and paving operations so walls, barriers, and drainage tie into final grade and alignment.
• Verify materials acceptance, certificates of compliance, sampling and testing frequencies, and keep nonconforming materials out of the work.
• Document each shift in accurate daily reports, including pay item quantities, contractor labor and equipment, photos, and field conditions.
• Identify nonconforming work early, document it, and coordinate with the resident engineer and contractor until it’s corrected.
• Monitor contractor compliance with traffic control, lane closure windows, and safety requirements during night and weekend operations.
• Attend preconstruction, pre-pour, and progress meetings, and keep inspection records ready for audit and closeout.
• Inspect work against Caltrans Standards and Specifications, and approved contract documents.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
• Must be licensed to operate motor vehicles in accordance with California Law, with the ability to travel to project sites as required.
• 5+ years of highway construction inspection experience for large (>$500M), complex, highway transportation projects.
• Construction inspection experience on Caltrans projects with working knowledge of the Caltrans Standard Specifications, Standard Plans, and Construction Manual.
• Hands-on experience inspecting retaining wall construction and CIDH piles (drilled shafts) installation, including working knowledge of the Caltrans Foundation Manual.
• Experience inspecting roadway concrete structures, such as soundwalls, concrete barriers, drainage structures, and sign structure foundations.
• Ability to read and interpret roadway and structure plans, special provisions, shop drawings, and foundation reports.
• Willingness to work night and weekend shifts, including extended shifts during freeway closures.
• Proficiency with construction inspection documentation platforms (e.g., Bluebeam Revu, etc.).
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite/Office 365 (e.g., Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

• ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I, ICC Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector, or equivalent inspection certifications.
• OSHA 30 certification.
• Experience with CIDH integrity testing, specialty retaining walls (MSE, soldier pile, soil nail), or bridge widening structures.

Compensation Details

Expected Salary: $70k-$72k/year ($33-$35/hour).
