Interview & Tech Test Tips and Tricks

Preparing for these assessments involves more than just brushing up on technical skills; it requires a strategic approach to ensure you can effectively showcase your abilities under pressure. Similarly, performing well during the actual interviews demands a combination of technical knowledge, communication skills, and composure.

Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a newcomer to the tech industry, understanding how to excel in both tech tests and interviews is essential. With the right strategies, you can navigate these challenges effectively, turning each job application into a potential career opportunity.

Navigating the tech hiring landscape requires a clear understanding of the interview and testing processes which tech companies use to identify top talent. Initially, the hiring journey typically starts with a screening call—often informal yet crucial in determining cultural and basic technical fit. This leads into more intensive tech tests, designed to evaluate a candidate's practical skills in real-world scenarios. These tests range from coding challenges and timed quizzes to project-based assignments and intricate system design simulations, each tailored to assess different aspects of a candidate’s abilities.

Employers utilise these assessments not just to gauge technical expertise but also to observe problem-solving strategies, adaptability to new and complex problems, and the ability to work effectively under pressure. The ultimate goal is to ensure that potential hires not only align with the technical requirements but can also contribute to the company's ongoing projects and long-term objectives.

Successfully navigating tech interviews and tests begins long before you actually set foot in the interview room. A robust preparation strategy is essential, incorporating thorough research, technical practice, and the honing of soft skills.

Researching the Company: Understanding the company you are applying to can significantly increase your chances of success. Start by diving into their technology stack to understand the tools and technologies they use. Familiarise yourself with their company culture by exploring their website, reading employee reviews on platforms like Glassdoor, and checking their social media presence. Additionally, stay informed about their recent projects or product launches, as this will help you tailor your responses to reflect your knowledge and enthusiasm about their current work.

Technical Preparation: This is the backbone of your preparation process. Regularly practice coding problems on platforms like LeetCode, CodeSignal, or HackerRank to sharpen your programming skills. Review core algorithms and data structures, as these are often focal points in tech tests. If the role involves system design, devote time to understanding large-scale system architectures and common design patterns. This not only prepares you for specific questions but also enhances your overall technical fluency.

Enhancing Soft Skills: Tech interviews often assess more than just technical expertise; they evaluate how you solve problems and communicate those solutions. Work on clearly articulating your thought process during problem-solving. This can be practised through mock interviews or by explaining your solution to a peer or mentor. Additionally, improving your presentation skills can help in scenarios where you are asked to present past projects or hypothetical project plans.

Communication Skills : The ability to articulate your thought processes and solutions clearly is vital. Interviewers are not just interested in the correct answer but also in how you arrived at it. Talk through your thought process as you tackle a problem, explaining your decision-making at each step. This transparency not only demonstrates your problem-solving skills but also your ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively.

By combining these elements into your preparation, you create a well-rounded strategy that prepares you for both the predictable and unpredictable elements of tech interviews and tests. This proactive approach not only boosts your confidence but also showcases your commitment and suitability for the role you're targeting.

Performing well in a tech interview goes beyond technical know-how; it also requires excellent communication skills and a strategic approach to both in-person and remote settings. Here’s how you can ensure you make the best impression possible.

Practical Tips for Interview Settings

In-Person Interviews: Ensure you arrive early, dressed appropriately for the company’s culture. Bring necessary materials like a notebook and pen for jotting down thoughts or questions during the interview. Pay attention to your body language; maintain eye contact and use gestures to convey confidence and engagement.

Remote Interviews: Test your technology beforehand to avoid any technical difficulties. Find a quiet, well-lit space where you won’t be interrupted. Position your camera at eye level and make sure your background is professional and tidy. Log on a few minutes early to demonstrate punctuality.

Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them:

Over-preparing Technical Responses: While it’s important to prepare, sounding rehearsed can be off-putting. Instead, aim for a balance between preparedness and spontaneity, allowing for more genuine interaction.

Neglecting Behavioural Questions: Tech interviews often include behavioural questions aimed at understanding how you function in a team or handle stress. Prepare by reflecting on past professional experiences where you demonstrated key skills like teamwork, leadership, or resilience. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your responses concisely and effectively.

By focusing on these elements, you can navigate the nuances of tech interviews more successfully, showcasing not only your technical expertise but also your adaptability and interpersonal skills. This holistic approach can significantly increase your chances of making a lasting impression and securing the role.

After completing a tech test or interview, the follow-up process is crucial in maintaining a positive impression and setting the stage for future opportunities. Sending a follow-up email not only demonstrates your professionalism but also reinforces your interest in the position. This email should be concise, expressing thanks for the opportunity to interview or take the test, reiterating your enthusiasm for the role, and, if appropriate, briefly mentioning a discussion point or moment from the interview that stood out to you.

Requesting feedback is another vital step, whether you progress in the hiring process or not. Politely ask for insights on areas for improvement and strengths you demonstrated. This feedback is invaluable as it provides a direct line of sight into your performance and how it is perceived, allowing you to tailor your approach in future applications and interviews.

Understanding and handling rejection with grace can also be transformative for your career. View any rejection not as a setback but as a stepping stone that provides insights and experience, refining your skills and preparing you for the next opportunity. By embracing these steps, you ensure continuous growth and readiness for future challenges.

On the day of your tech interview or test, ensure mental clarity and physical readiness. Start with a good night's sleep, have a nutritious breakfast, and review your notes briefly to keep key concepts fresh. Dress comfortably yet professionally, even for remote interviews, to set the right tone.
