Job Description

Founded in 2019, Brimstone is an innovative industrial startup with a proprietary, efficient, and deeply decarbonized process for producing Ordinary Portland Cement — one that also enables co-production of steel and aluminum. We're now growing our all-star team of sharp, mission-driven, collaborative professionals as we continue to refine our process and move towards construction of our first production facilities.

Job Brief

We're looking for a part-time Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Coordinator to help keep our people, contractors, and sites safe and in compliance as we grow. This role splits its time between building and documenting the compliance backbone we'll need at future production sites, and being hands-on in Oakland for contractor coordination, inspections, and day-to-day safety support. You'll work closely with facilities, engineering, and outside contractors and regulators, so this role is a great fit for someone who's comfortable both writing a program from a blank page and walking a job site in a hard hat.

Key Focus Areas of the Role May Include

Program Development & Compliance Planning

• Write, update, and maintain EHS programs and written plans (e.g., IIPP, hazard communication, PPE, emergency action, lockout/tagout) to meet Cal/OSHA and federal requirements.

• Plan out EHS compliance frameworks and program structure for future Brimstone locations, anticipating requirements before construction and operations ramp up.

• Maintain and organize EHS documentation, training records, and permits across sites.

• Track and interpret applicable regulations (OSHA, EPA, state/local) and translate them into practical, site-ready programs.

Onsite Support & Inspections (Oakland)

• Be onsite in Oakland on a recurring basis to support contractors working in and around company space, ensuring safe work practices and permit compliance.

• Coordinate and participate in inspections, walkthroughs, and audits with contractors, landlords, and regulatory bodies.

• Participate in Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) development in support of research and development.

• Identify hazards during site visits and work with facilities/contractors to close out corrective actions.

• Support incident reporting and investigation as needed.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Partner with engineering and facilities teams to build safety considerations into new equipment, processes, and space planning.

• Serve as a point of contact for EHS questions from employees and contractors.

• Provide clear, practical guidance rather than purely procedural sign-off — helping teams understand the "why" behind requirements.

What You'll Bring

• 5+ years of experience in an EHS role, ideally spanning both program/policy development and hands-on field or site work.

• Working knowledge of Cal/OSHA and general industry safety regulations; experience standing up EHS programs from scratch is a strong plus.

• Comfort managing contractor safety compliance and participating in inspections/audits.

• Strong written communication skills — you'll be authoring programs and documentation that others rely on.

• Collaborative work style focused on support of on-site functional team managers and leadership to identify priorities and execute independently.

• Ability to be onsite in Oakland, CA on a regular basis; the remainder of the role can be worked remotely.

• Experience in industrial, manufacturing, construction, or process environments is a plus.

• Startup experience, or comfort with ambiguity and building process where none exists yet, is a plus.

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
