Trials & Research Radiographer

Shape the Future of Radiotherapy Research While Maintaining Your Clinical Expertise

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and motivated Therapeutic Radiographer to combine clinical practice with a leading role in the development and delivery of radiotherapy research and clinical trials at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust.

This unique split role offers the successful candidate the opportunity to maintain and develop their clinical skills while taking a leading role in a portfolio of high-profile radiotherapy research studies. We are seeking a self-motivated radiographer with a passion for innovation, evidence-based practice, and improving patient outcomes through research.

You will lead and coordinate in over 15 national and international radiotherapy trials.

Working closely with clinical, scientific, research and managerial colleagues, you will ensure the safe, effective, and efficient delivery of trial protocols while maintaining the highest standards of patient-centred care. You will play a pivotal role in expanding research activity across the service, supporting the implementation of new studies, and contributing to the future direction of radiotherapy practice within the Trust.

This is a fantastic opportunity to influence and shape the future of radiotherapy research within a progressive and innovative Radiotherapy Service.

Our Department and Cutting-Edge Technology

Joining our team means becoming part of a forward-thinking department that combines advanced technology, innovative treatments, and a strong culture of continuous improvement.

We operate a highly sophisticated, completely paperless department integrated through ARIA v15.6. Alongside your research responsibilities, you will have the opportunity to maintain clinical competencies in areas such as Pre-Treatment, Treatment, DXR, or Brachytherapy.

Our technology includes:

  • Four Varian TrueBeam 3.0 linear accelerators with advanced IGRT imaging, including online 4D CBCT, iCBCT and triggered imaging.
  • Advanced motion management technologies, including 6DOF treatment couches for Head & Neck, Upper GI and Lung SABR, alongside abdominal compression immobilisation.
  • A wide-bore Siemens GO Sim CT scanner.
  • Xstrahl Orthovoltage service.
  • Dedicated Brachytherapy suite.

Driving Excellence in SABR and Clinical Research

We are a progressive centre with an expanding SABR portfolio and a strong commitment to research and innovation.

We currently deliver SABR for lung, nodal, bone, prostate and spine tumours and are actively expanding into adrenal, kidney and liver SABR treatments. Research is embedded within our department, and we continue to recruit patients into a growing portfolio of national clinical trials that help shape future standards of care.

As a Trials & Research Radiographer, you will be instrumental in ensuring patients have access to cutting-edge treatment opportunities while contributing to the evidence base that drives radiotherapy forward.

Why Choose PHU?

At PHU, we are committed not only to delivering outstanding patient care, but also to supporting and developing our people. Our Radiotherapy Department was proudly recognised as the Society of Radiographers South East Team of the Year 2023.

When you join us, you'll benefit from:

True Work-Life Balance

Driven by our active Radiographer Staff Committee, we support genuine flexible working arrangements. This split role can be undertaken across 4 to 5 days per week tbc, offering flexibility while maintaining continuity of patient care and research activity.

A Culture of Support

Well-established monthly clinical supervision is embedded throughout the department, ensuring staff feel supported, valued and empowered in their professional development.

Investment in Your Future

We actively support attendance at national meetings and conferences, provide opportunities to present research findings, and encourage postgraduate study and continued professional development.

Defined Career Pathways

With three Consultant Radiographers specialising in Breast, Urology and Palliative Radiotherapy, alongside a growing apprentice workforce, we have a proven track record of developing Enhanced Practice, Advanced Clinical Practice, leadership and consultant-level roles.

Opportunity to Lead Research

This role offers significant opportunities to develop expertise in clinical trial management, service development, research governance, project leadership and innovation within radiotherapy.

We would like all potential candidates to make contact with the team to try and find out about this role and the work we do. Informal visits can be arranged by contacting the Senior Research Sister, Gemma Dixon on 02392 286000 ext. 3773 or by email gemma.dixon13@nhs.net .

Interview dates are to be confirmed.
