Senior GIS and Spatial Data Specialist

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful conservation outcomes. As Trust for Nature's Senior GIS and Spatial Data Specialist, you will guide the organisation's spatial systems, data governance and analytical capability while helping protect Victoria's most important private land.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Conservation Science, you will play a key role in administering, governing and continuously improving Trust for Nature's enterprise GIS systems, spatial databases and analytical workflows. You will ensure GIS systems and capability are fit for purpose, while delivering spatial analyses that inform conservation science, planning, monitoring, reporting and on-ground delivery.

You will work within the state-wide science team to build GIS capability across the organisation through mentoring, technical support, and collaboration with our internal team. Your work will directly influence how conservation priorities are identified, managed, and protected across Victoria.

A key focus of the role will be developing consistent GIS training, guidance and staff support across the organisation. You will also support the roll-out of Trust for Nature's Habitat Track monitoring program by supporting the development of data infrastructure, data management processes and analytical pipelines that turn monitoring data into practical conservation insights.

You are an experienced GIS and spatial data professional with a balanced skillset spanning system administration, data management and applied spatial analysis. You bring technical depth, sound judgement and a collaborative approach to helping others use spatial data effectively.

The successful candidate will bring:

  • Tertiary qualifications in GIS, Spatial Science, Data Science, Ecology, Conservation or Geography (or related discipline)
  • An understanding of conservation and land management in Victoria and experience applying GIS and data analysis in this context.
  • Demonstrated experience in GIS administration and analysis within environmental, land management, planning, natural resource management or other directly transferable contexts.
  • Advanced capability in spatial data analyses, mapping and data-driven decision support
  • Experience developing and implementing automated workflows, data infrastructure, or analysis pipelines for ecological, environmental, monitoring, natural resource management, or related datasets, including the use of Python, SQL, R, or similar
  • The ability to build and develop internal capacity in GIS skills across the organisation.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with experience working collaboratively across teams to deliver shared data, spatial systems and conservation outcomes.

We encourage applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds and experiences, including those who may not meet every listed criterion.
