We're working with an established engineering business in South Wales that designs and manufactures specialist high-tech equipment for customers worldwide. They're looking for a Software Systems Engineer to join their team, working on the development, maintenance and improvement of software and control systems used within their machinery.
This is an opportunity to work on a range of engineering projects, from developing new software solutions to supporting existing systems, troubleshooting technical issues and helping bring equipment through testing, commissioning and into production.
The role would suit an experienced software engineer with an interest in industrial automation and machine control, as well as someone earlier in their career who has a solid software development background and the potential to grow into a broader engineering systems role.
Key ResponsibilitiesDesign, develop and maintain software for existing and future engineering projects.
Work closely with engineering, product development and production teams to understand requirements and develop suitable software solutions.
Produce software specifications, technical documentation, test plans and procedures.
Develop and test software to ensure systems meet technical requirements and quality standards.
Investigate software and system issues, troubleshoot faults and implement effective fixes and improvements.
Support machine trials, installation, commissioning, acceptance testing and validation activities.
Work with customers, end users and external contractors to ensure systems meet project requirements.
Support the ongoing development and improvement of existing control systems, including legacy software written in VB.NET.
Assist with technical reviews, knowledge sharing and training colleagues where required.
Keep technical knowledge up to date and support occasional overseas site installations when needed.
We're keen to hear from candidates who enjoy solving technical problems and want to work at the intersection of software development, engineering and automation.
You may already have experience developing software for industrial machinery, automated equipment or control systems, or you may have a strong software development foundation and a genuine interest in applying your skills in an engineering environment.
Ideally, you'll have:
Experience developing software using VB.NET or a similar programming language, with a willingness to develop your knowledge of existing VB.NET systems.
A background in software development, ideally within engineering, manufacturing, automation or a related technical environment.
An understanding of how software interacts with machinery, hardware or control systems.
Experience, or an interest in, special-purpose machinery, machine control, motion control or industrial automation.
The ability to analyse requirements, troubleshoot problems and develop practical solutions.
Good communication skills and the ability to work with technical and non-technical colleagues.
A structured, methodical approach to testing, documentation and problem-solving.
The motivation to learn, take ownership of tasks and develop your technical skills.
Experience with PLCs, laser control systems, machine installation, commissioning or formal equipment validation would be advantageous, but is not essential.
A relevant HND, degree or equivalent practical experience in software development, computer science, mathematics, engineering or a related discipline would be beneficial.
What's on Offer?A full-time, permanent position with an established engineering business.
The opportunity to work on specialist equipment supplied to customers internationally.
Varied projects combining software development, engineering and automation.
The chance to build on existing technical skills and develop into a broader systems engineering role.
Competitive salary and benefits package.
If you have a software development background and would like to apply your skills to real-world engineering systems, we'd be keen to hear from you.
Apply today with your CV, and we'll be happy to discuss the opportunity in more detail.
