Job Description

Backend Engineer - Contract

Location: Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh or Bristol
Contract: Initial 3 months, with view to extend
Rate: Up to £800 per day
Working Pattern: Hybrid

We're looking for an experienced Backend Engineer to join a high-profile technology programme focused on building an enterprise connectivity and orchestration platform.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on a modern platform that enables secure enterprise integrations, AI agent workflows, knowledge access and business process automation.

You'll be working across backend engineering, distributed systems, APIs, cloud-native technologies and event-driven architecture, collaborating closely with AI Engineers, Data Scientists, Enterprise Architects and Security teams.

The Role

You will be responsible for designing, developing and optimising scalable backend services that form the core of the enterprise integration and orchestration platform.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design, develop and maintain backend services using Java, Python and/or Node.js
  • Build secure and scalable REST APIs for enterprise applications and AI services
  • Develop microservices-based architectures supporting orchestration, workflow automation and knowledge access
  • Implement event-driven solutions using technologies such as Kafka and Pub/Sub
  • Develop enterprise authentication and authorisation solutions using OAuth, SAML and SSO
  • Build and manage integrations through API Gateways, focusing on security, reliability and performance
  • Develop and deploy cloud-native applications using containers and modern cloud/platform technologies
  • Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines for automated testing, deployment and release management
  • Establish strong observability, monitoring, logging and alerting capabilities
  • Contribute to technical design reviews, engineering standards and best practices
  • Work closely with AI Engineers, Data Scientists, Enterprise Architects, Security teams and business stakeholders

What We're Looking For

We're interested in engineers with strong backend development experience and a background in building enterprise-scale, distributed and highly available platforms.

Strong experience in several of the following would be highly beneficial:

  • Java, Python or Node.js
  • REST APIs and microservices
  • Kafka, Pub/Sub or other event-driven technologies
  • Kubernetes / OpenShift and containerisation
  • OAuth, SAML and SSO
  • API Gateways and enterprise integrations
  • Cloud-native development
  • CI/CD and DevOps practices
  • Distributed systems and high-availability architectures
  • Observability, monitoring and operational tooling
  • Enterprise Integration Platforms
  • AI/Agent Orchestration Platforms
