Senior Product Owner (AI Innovation)

Rate: £552.00 per day (Inside IR35)
Duration: 6 Months
Location: London
Clearance Required: BPSS

The Opportunity

We're looking for an experienced Senior Product Owner to lead the delivery of an innovative AI-enabled proof of concept within a large and complex enterprise environment.

This is a hands-on role where you'll take a concept from discovery through to pilot deployment, working closely with business and technology teams to identify high-value use cases, validate outcomes, and establish a roadmap for wider adoption. You'll play a key role in shaping AI-driven solutions that improve operational efficiency, enhance data quality, accelerate automation, and deliver measurable business value.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify, assess, and prioritise high-value AI use cases aligned to business objectives.
  • Define and own the product vision, roadmap, and success measures.
  • Lead discovery activities, stakeholder engagement, and requirements gathering.
  • Validate business value through user research, experimentation, and iterative testing.
  • Translate complex business needs into prioritised backlogs and actionable delivery plans.
  • Work closely with engineers, architects, data specialists, and stakeholders to drive delivery.
  • Manage product priorities, trade-offs, risks, and dependencies.
  • Support governance activities and secure stakeholder buy-in at key decision points.
  • Drive the transition from proof of concept to scalable product delivery.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as a Product Owner or Senior Product Owner within complex public sector environments.
  • Strong demonstrable experience delivering products and services in line with Government Digital Service (GDS) standards and ways of working.
  • Extensive experience working within UK Government departments or public sector organisations.
  • Strong understanding of:
  • GDS Service Standard
  • Agile delivery
  • User-centred design
  • Product lifecycle management
  • Discovery, Alpha, Beta, and Live phases
Experience delivering AI, data, analytics, automation, or digital transformation initiatives.Strong product discovery, backlog management, prioritisation, and roadmap development skills.Experience taking products from concept through to pilot and live delivery.Excellent stakeholder engagement and influencing skills.Ability to translate complex business requirements into clear product outcomes.Strong understanding of emerging technologies, AI solutions, and innovation delivery.

What We're Looking For

We're specifically seeking a Product Owner with a strong Government Digital Service (GDS) background who is comfortable operating within complex public sector environments. You'll have a proven track record of delivering products through GDS phases and applying GDS standards, user-centred design principles, and outcome-based delivery approaches to achieve measurable business value.

Candidates without demonstrable GDS Product Owner experience are unlikely to be suitable for this role.
