Overview

We are seeking an experienced Knowledge Modeller with AI experience to join a major government transformation programme. This role will focus on designing, developing, and maintaining knowledge models, ontologies, semantic data structures, and AI-driven knowledge systems that support data-driven decision making, automation, and intelligent services across public sector environments.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in knowledge representation, semantic technologies, data modelling, and applied AI, alongside experience working within government or highly regulated environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop enterprise knowledge models, taxonomies, ontologies, and semantic frameworks.
• Create structured representations of complex business domains to support AI and machine learning solutions.
• Work closely with architects, data engineers, data scientists, business analysts, and stakeholders to define knowledge structures.
• Develop and maintain knowledge graphs and semantic data models.
• Support the implementation of AI-powered search, reasoning, and decision-support capabilities.
• Ensure alignment between organisational data models, business processes, and AI solutions.
• Translate complex stakeholder requirements into scalable knowledge representations.
• Drive best practice in metadata management, information architecture, and semantic modelling.
• Contribute to AI governance, explainability, and responsible AI initiatives.
• Support documentation, standards, and knowledge management processes within the programme.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Proven experience as a Knowledge Modeller, Ontology Engineer, Semantic Data Modeller, or similar role.
• Strong understanding of knowledge representation techniques and semantic technologies.
• Experience building and maintaining ontologies, taxonomies, and knowledge graphs.
• Hands-on experience supporting AI, machine learning, or generative AI solutions.
• Knowledge of semantic web standards such as:
  • RDF
  • OWL
  • SKOS
  • SPARQL
• Experience with knowledge graph platforms and graph databases.
• Strong data modelling and information architecture skills.
• Ability to engage effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience working within Agile delivery environments.
• Previous UK Government or Public Sector experience.

Desirable Skills

• Experience with Generative AI, LLMs, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), or AI search solutions.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Azure AI, AWS AI/ML, or Google Cloud AI services.
• Knowledge of data governance and information management frameworks.
• Experience supporting GDS-aligned programmes.
• Understanding of AI ethics, governance, and explainability.
