Job Description

BlueScope is an Australian-born global success story spanning 15 countries. Our team of over 16,500 people is our strength and we want our people to be safe, successful and well. We’re leaders and innovators in transforming steel into smart products and solutions that support society, today and in the future. We’re proud of brands, like COLORBOND ® steel, that inspire and protect everything from hospitals to bridges and stadiums.

The Opportunity

If you’ve started your career in structural consulting and want to explore a different side of building design, BlueScope Building Components’ Design Solutions Group (DSG) offers a way to build on that experience. As a Junior Design Engineer based in our Minchinbury office, you’ll prepare concept-level structural designs that show builders, engineers and developers how our products can be used in their buildings. Working closely with a dedicated senior engineering mentor, you’ll develop your capability in steel and composite structures through varied project work, with guidance as you take on more complex designs.

You’ll work with a national team of Business Development Managers (BDMs) who are also practising structural engineers. They’ll identify opportunities and brief you on each project’s building and design requirements, staying involved as you work through the structural solution.

You’ll join a team whose structural design work has contributed to projects such as Western Sydney International Airport, where DSG worked with Multiplex to develop an efficient structural solution using Fielders’ composite decking. Your own work could span data centres, hospitals and other major buildings, with different structural requirements to work through on each project.

What Will You Do?

Working with your senior mentor and the state-based engineering team, you’ll:

  • prepare concept-level structural schemes from project briefs, showing how our building products can work within a proposed structure
  • develop structural calculations, drawings and technical documentation
  • investigate structural design problems and explore practical alternatives with the team
  • use design and review tools including RAPT, Strand7, Space Gass and Bluebeam as part of your project work
  • work with the state-based engineering BDMs to clarify requirements, respond to questions and deliver designs within agreed timeframes
  • manage several design tasks at different stages, communicating priorities and seeking support when requirements or deadlines change

More About You

You’ll have a degree in civil or structural engineering and practical experience designing building structures, ideally within structural consulting. You’ll bring:

  • an understanding of structural behaviour and the engineering principles behind your design decisions
  • practical experience preparing structural calculations and technical documentation
  • a practical approach to problem solving and a willingness to explore different design options
  • attention to detail and the ability to organise your work as priorities move between projects
  • initiative in asking questions, following through on design tasks and developing your technical knowledge
  • a collaborative approach and clear communication with the engineers you support
