Manufacturing Controller Requirements & Qualifications


  • Hands-on financial experience in a manufacturing environment, supporting operations and business leaders
  • Expertise with long-build cycles (52+ weeks) and work-in-progress (WIP) accounting
  • Deep knowledge of manufacturing costing, job costing, inventory, margins, and financial reporting
  • Demonstrated strength in cost analysis, product pricing, labor rate evaluation, forecasting, and budgeting
  • Ability to identify financial gaps and areas for process or margin improvement
  • Skilled at translating complex financial data into actionable guidance for leaders across the business
  • Prior experience as a Manufacturing Controller, Plant Controller, Division Controller, Corporate Controller, or similar manufacturing finance leader


Manufacturing Controller Preferred Background & Skills


  • Background in custom-engineered or large industrial equipment (dryers, asphalt plants, heavy equipment, process machinery, etc.)
  • Experience supporting multiple facilities, companies, or business units within a manufacturing group
  • Familiarity with extended production schedules and complex WIP/project-based accounting
  • Success partnering with leadership across ownership, sales, engineering, operations, and plant management
  • Ability to mentor operational leaders with varying levels of financial literacy
  • Comfortable in entrepreneurial, privately held, or family-owned business settings
  • Willing to spend significant time in production environments to understand the business firsthand


Manufacturing Controller Day-to-Day Responsibilities


  • Analyze manufacturing costs, labor rates, overhead, margins, and product pricing to guide business growth and profitability
  • Oversee accurate WIP accounting throughout long production cycles
  • Review and improve how labor, material, and production costs are captured and allocated
  • Advise leadership on appropriate pricing strategies for both new and existing products
  • Prepare budgets, forecasts, and financial reports to drive key decisions
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to improve margins and operational performance
  • Educate and counsel leaders at all levels on financial results, risks, and opportunities
  • Work directly with plant and operations teams to enhance financial processes and accountability
  • Ensure financial reporting reflects actual manufacturing activities, providing timely, actionable insights
