Job Description

Senior Infrastructure Engineer - Linux

Location: Hanslope Park, Milton Keynes (Hybrid minimum 60% onsite)
Contract: 6 months initially
Rate: £469.98 Daily rate PAYE / £621.69 Daily rate Umbrella
Start: ASAP, subject to security clearance
Clearance: SC required / candidates must be eligible to obtain SC

Were currently recruiting for a Senior Infrastructure Engineer / Linux SME to join a secure UK Government environment on an initial 6-month contract.

This is a technically hands-on role supporting enterprise Linux platforms and wider infrastructure services, with a strong focus on platform stability, security, automation and continuous improvement.

The successful candidate will work alongside experienced infrastructure specialists, supporting both BAU operations and project delivery across a secure and assured environment.

The Role

You will be responsible for providing senior-level Linux expertise across enterprise infrastructure, including:

  • Administration, support and troubleshooting of enterprise Linux platforms
  • Maintaining system stability, performance and security
  • Supporting BAU incidents and technical problem resolution
  • Building and maintaining Linux-based development environments
  • Containerising applications and services
  • Supporting modern deployment approaches alongside traditional infrastructure operations
  • Working with infrastructure teams on platform improvements and development
  • Identifying opportunities to improve infrastructure through automation
  • Taking a lead role in discussions around environment development, scalability and growth
  • Maintaining clear and robust technical documentation
  • Working within formal service management and security processes
  • Sharing technical knowledge and expertise with the wider team

The role will also involve working within a VMware technology environment, supporting a wider team responsible for government platforms and services.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for a strong Linux infrastructure professional with proven enterprise experience.

Essential:

  • Strong commercial experience administering and supporting Linux environments
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Experience supporting enterprise infrastructure in a structured/service-managed environment
  • Experience working within security-conscious or highly controlled environments
  • Experience with automation and infrastructure improvement
  • Experience supporting Linux-based development environments
  • Experience with containers/containerisation
  • Strong communication and technical documentation skills
  • Ability to work effectively with wider infrastructure and technical teams

Desirable:

  • VMware experience
  • Red Hat experience
  • RHCSA, RHCE or LFCS certification
  • LPIC-1 or LPIC-2 certification

Security Requirements

Due to the nature of the environment, candidates must:

  • Be a British citizen or hold dual nationality
  • Have been resident in the UK for at least 2 of the last 5 years
  • Hold SC clearance, or be able to successfully obtain SC clearance

Existing SC clearance is advantageous but not essential, although candidates requiring clearance should be aware that the process can take approximately 68 weeks.

Candidates must also not have worked in the same or a similar contractor role for this client within the previous 6 months.

Working Pattern

The primary location is Hanslope Park, Milton Keynes (MK19).

This is a hybrid role, with a minimum of 60% of working time required onsite. Occasional travel to locations around Milton Keynes and London may also be required.

Standard working hours are a minimum of 37.5 hours per week, with flexibility around start and finish times.

There is also an on-call requirement, with candidates expected to participate in an on-call rota. A minimum of six on-call shifts is expected across a typical 28-day cycle.
