Platform Engineering Lead

Wenco has R&D offices located in Canada and Australia, and this specific role is based in Brisbane, Queensland.

The Role

The Wenco Platform team builds and operates the environments, deployment pipelines, and observability tooling that Wenco's next-generation fleet management and mine operations software runs on. That includes two very different production targets: Wenco-operated cloud deployments, and customer-managed on-prem deployments at mine sites.

We are looking for a Platform Engineering Lead to own that platform and lead the small team of engineers already doing this work day to day.

• A foundational problem. Wenco Platform environments and pipelines are still being standardised. There isplenty of opportunity to define how this platform gets built and operated for years to come.
• Real breadth. The platform spans cloud infrastructure, on-prem/vSphere deployments at mine sites, andeverything connecting them, so the technical breadth is wide.
• A new leadership function. The team is already doing this work; this is the first formal lead for it, with realscope to shape how it operates.
• Cross-functional partnership. Work directly with the T3 support team to build Wenco Platform's incident response and production recovery capability from the ground up.
• High impact. What you build becomes the standard the rest of Wenco Platform runs on.

What You'll Do

• Own environment and pipeline design. Provision and maintain development, test, and productionenvironments using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), and build CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps) forreliable, repeatable releases.
• Structure pipelines for independence. Keep infrastructure provisioning, application deployment, andconfiguration changes separately deployable from one another.
• Own observability tooling. Structured logging, health checks, metrics, and alerting across allenvironments.
• Build incident response capability. Partner with the T3 support team to build and mature productionrecovery processes; this capability doesn't yet exist in mature form today.
• Set environment standards. Define and enforce standards for environment lifecycle management,configuration management, and secrets handling.
• Lead and grow the team. Mentor a small team of platform engineers: technical direction, design and codereview, and career development.
• Stay hands-on. Write infrastructure code, build pipelines, and instrument services alongside the team,rather than directing from a distance.
• Partner across teams. Work with product and engineering teams so platform practices support deliveryspeed without compromising reliability.
• Track platform health. Report on delivery and platform performance indicators, such as deploymentfrequency, change failure rate, and recovery time.
• Enable self-service. Build tooling and documentation so engineers can provision and manage their owndevelopment environments.

Required Skills

The tech stack and required skills are broad, so we do not expect expertise across all of it. We are looking for depth in the essentials, credible breadth across some of the other aspects, and the motivation and ability to pick up what you are missing.

Essential:

• Experience. 5+ years in platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, or site reliability engineering,including hands-on ownership of production systems.
• Infrastructure as Code. Hands-on experience with Terraform (or comparable IaC tooling) managing cloudinfrastructure across multiple environments.
• CI/CD pipelines. Experience designing, building, and maintaining pipelines (Azure DevOps or a comparableplatform).
• Technical leadership. Experience leading, mentoring, or providing technical direction to other engineers,while remaining comfortable working hands-on as an individual contributor.
• Communication. Able to explain platform tradeoffs clearly to both technical and non-technicalstakeholders.

Highly valued:

• Cloud and containers. AWS infrastructure and container orchestration (Kubernetes; self-managed/onpremexperience with a lightweight distribution such as k3s is a bonus).
• Observability. The Grafana stack (Grafana, Loki, and related tooling) for metrics, logs, and dashboards.
• Incident management. Experience leading technical response on production incidents and running root cause analysis.
• Configuration and secrets management. Experience managing environment lifecycles acrossdevelopment, test, and production, including configuration and secrets handling.
• AI workflows. Hands-on skill driving AI coding assistants and agentic workflows, and a clear sense of wherethey help and where they do not.
• Domain experience. Mining, industrial, or other complex/regulated-domain systems is a plus, not required.

Education & Eligibility

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
• Eligible to work in Australia.
• Based in Brisbane with a hybrid working arrangement.
