Job Description

Backend Software Engineer

Manchester - 2 days in the office

6 Months Contract + Extension

£72.00 per hour

A global e-commerce product organisation is urgently looking for experienced Backend Engineers to help lay the technical groundwork for scaling global partner connectivity across our travel and attractions ecosystem.

In this role, you will be part of a core engineering team tasked with integrating global third-party providers directly into our platform. You'll focus on building resilient, cloud-native services that manage product ingestion, availability streams, real-time messaging, webhooks, and complex data translations-ensuring seamless communication between external platforms and internal microservices.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, deploy, and manage distributed backend microservices powering critical third-party integrations.
  • Create reliable, event-driven data flows to process partner product updates, availability matrices, and transactional notifications.
  • Apply strong distributed systems practices (fault tolerance, retries, rate-limiting, and idempotency) while leveraging metrics and tracing to maintain system health.
  • Own the Lifecycle: Take end-to-end technical ownership-from refining specs and coding to testing, safe releases, and live production monitoring.

Essential

  • Proven experience engineering high-scale production systems, primarily using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Hands-on experience developing microservices deployed via Kubernetes and AWS environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of event-streaming tools like Apache Kafka or comparable messaging backbones.
  • Deep understanding of RESTful API design, external integrations, distributed transaction handling, and canonical data models.
  • solid grasp of TDD/automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and active operational telemetry (using OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, or Grafana).
