Job Description

Transmission Line Design Engineer

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Principal / Senior Transmission Line Engineer to lead the engineering, design, and technical delivery of high-voltage transmission line projects, including renewable energy and standalone transmission projects.

The successful candidate will oversee projects from early-stage development and conceptual design through engineering, construction, and commissioning. This role will work closely with project management, development, construction, permitting, supply chain, and external engineering consultants to ensure projects meet technical, cost, schedule, quality, and safety objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead transmission line engineering activities from project development through construction and commissioning.
  • Define project scope, technical requirements, design criteria, and engineering strategies.
  • Develop scopes of work and support the selection and management of engineering and construction consultants.
  • Coordinate route development, surveys, geotechnical investigations, LiDAR data, permitting, and related engineering activities.
  • Manage and review engineering deliverables, including Issued for Bid (IFB), Issued for Procurement (IFP), Issued for Construction (IFC), and As-Built documentation.
  • Review engineering designs, technical documents, calculations, drawings, and specifications for quality and compliance.
  • Support project estimates, proposals, RFPs, and procurement activities by developing technical scopes and assumptions.
  • Coordinate with engineering, construction, project management, permitting, supply chain, and other project stakeholders.
  • Identify technical risks and engineering issues and develop practical solutions and value-engineering opportunities.
  • Monitor project engineering progress, risks, schedule, and technical deliverables.
  • Present project status, technical risks, issues, and mitigation strategies to project leadership and stakeholders.
  • Ensure engineering activities comply with applicable safety, quality, technical, and regulatory requirements.
  • Travel within North America as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 7+ years of direct experience in the development, design, engineering, and construction of high-voltage transmission line projects.
  • Strong knowledge of transmission line engineering, design, construction, and project development.
  • Experience interpreting one-line and three-line diagrams, plan and profile drawings, general arrangements, and engineering design packages.
  • Experience managing engineering consultants and coordinating multiple technical and project stakeholders.
  • Strong project management, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to identify technical challenges and provide practical, cost-effective engineering solutions.
  • Ability and willingness to travel within North America.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Project Engineering and/or Project Management.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) and/or PMP certification is a plus.
  • Experience with PLS-CADD, AutoCAD, Primavera P6, and Microsoft Office.
  • Experience supporting wind, solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and other renewable energy transmission projects.
  • Knowledge of transmission line engineering standards, routing, permitting, surveying, and construction processes.
  • Experience working with utilities, renewable energy developers, engineering consultants, and EPC contractors is a plus.
