Location: Woodlawn, MD – On-site, 5 days per week
Employment: Full-time
Compensation: $110,000/yr.-$130,000/yr.
Clearance: Must be able to obtain and maintain Public Trust

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Principal Software Engineer to design, develop, and support enterprise software applications in a federal government environment.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role focused on Java, Spring Boot, Angular, React, microservices, cloud-native applications, and DevOps practices. The successful candidate will develop scalable and secure applications, support system modernization, collaborate with technical teams, and provide guidance to junior and mid-level developers.

The position requires working on-site in Woodlawn, MD, five days per week. The final interview will be conducted in person.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop enterprise applications using Java, Spring Boot, Angular, React, and Twelve-Factor App methodology.
  • Develop responsive user interfaces using AngularJS, ReactJS, Node.js, TypeScript, JavaScript (ES13+), JSP, HTML, CSS, XML, AJAX, and jQuery.
  • Design web components compliant with Section 508 accessibility standards.
  • Design and develop microservices and RESTful APIs using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Develop and deploy cloud-native applications using AWS, Red Hat OpenShift, Docker, and related technologies.
  • Implement DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, Git, Bitbucket, and related tools.
  • Develop enterprise Java batch applications using JSR 352 and Spring Batch, with job scheduling through Control-M.
  • Design and implement SOAP web services using JAX-WS, Apache Axis, and WSDL, including WS-Security, IBM DataPower, WS-I, MTOM, and SOAP with Attachments.
  • Develop data access layers integrating IBM DB2 and PostgreSQL across z/OS, Linux, and other platforms using JPA, Hibernate, and Spring Data.
  • Design scalable, high-throughput, low-latency applications and optimize performance, caching, asynchronous processing, and load balancing.
  • Develop automated unit and integration tests using JUnit, Mockito, PowerMock, Cucumber, Gherkin, and BDD/TDD practices.
  • Identify and resolve application security vulnerabilities, code quality issues, and technical debt.
  • Create proofs of concept, UML diagrams, solution architecture documents, and technical documentation using tools such as Visio and Confluence.
  • Collaborate with business analysts, QA teams, project managers, and customers throughout Agile development.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements to architecture, development processes, and software delivery.
  • Serve as a hands-on Technical Lead, providing guidance and support to junior and mid-level developers.
  • Contribute to technical strategy, standards, and operational improvements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience with Java, Spring Boot, Angular, and React.
  • Extensive experience designing and developing applications using Java and JEE technologies.
  • Hands-on experience serving as a Technical Lead.
  • Strong experience with Angular, React, Express, or Node.js.
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies and tools, including Agility.
  • Experience designing microservices, RESTful APIs, and single-page applications.
  • Experience developing responsive web applications and addressing cross-browser compatibility.
  • Experience designing high-throughput, low-latency, scalable systems.
  • Experience developing cloud-native applications using AWS and PostgreSQL.
  • Strong knowledge of Red Hat OpenShift, Docker, and PaaS technologies.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools, including Jenkins, Git, Bitbucket, Jira, Nexus, Maven, SonarQube, Fortify, and UrbanCode Deploy.
  • Experience with Java and JEE technologies, including Struts, Spring Framework (IoC, MVC, Transactions, Security, Batch), Spring JDBC, JPA, Hibernate, DB2, Tomcat, and WebSphere.
  • Experience with web services and security technologies, including XML, JAXP, JAXB, JAX-WS, Axis, Jersey, JSON, CXF, REST, SOAP, LTPA, and OAuth2/JWT.
  • Experience with automated unit testing, TDD, BDD, JUnit, mocking frameworks, and Cucumber.
  • Experience using SonarQube to identify and remediate bugs, vulnerabilities, security hotspots, and technical debt.
  • Knowledge of web application security vulnerabilities and remediation practices.
  • Experience optimizing CPU, memory, response times, and application scalability in cloud environments.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and technical leadership skills.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
  • Must be willing to work on-site in Woodlawn, MD, five days per week.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or doctoral degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with Kafka-based event-driven architectures, including producers, consumers, topics, partitions, consumer groups, replication, retention, Kafka Connect, and Kafka Streams.
  • Knowledge of artificial intelligence and its application to enterprise software architecture and modernization.
  • Experience implementing Section 508 accessibility standards.
  • Experience preparing technical white papers and system design documentation.
  • Prior experience supporting federal or state government IT projects.
  • Experience with low-code platforms such as ServiceNow, Pega, or Microsoft Power Platform.

Salary: $110,000/yr.-$130,000/yr. based on experience.

Health insurance stipend. More benefits will be added in the next 6 months.
