Quick overview
Job description
- Shape and maintain Qantas AI architecture and capability.
- Lead architectural governance, embedding standards and guardrails across domains.
- Permanent, Full-time opportunity located Qantas Head Campus in Mascot
Technology is at the heart of how the Qantas Group delivers for our customers, people and shareholders. As we modernise, simplify and invest in the future, the right architectural foundations are critical to enabling safe, reliable and scalable solutions across the Group.
As a Solution Architect - AI in our Data, AI and Integrations architecture team, you'll shape how the Qantas Group designs, governs and scales AI. You'll set the architecture for our enterprise GenAI platform and AI/ML workbench. You'll also make sure our AI solutions are built on well-governed data from our new Snowflake-based data platform.
You'll work with business leaders, delivery teams, fellow architects and technology partners to turn AI opportunities into solutions that are safe, cost-effective and built to last.
What you'll be doing
- Lead the solution architecture for AI and ML initiatives, from generative and agentic AI to predictive ML, and steer them through architecture review.
- Maintain the AI capability model and logical architecture and contribute to the AI and ML reference architecture.
- Design the enterprise GenAI platform and AI/ML workbench covering model access, agent orchestration, retrieval patterns and tool integration (including Model Context Protocol).
- Build AI governance into every design, including privacy by design, data residency, model inference location, human oversight, evaluation and monitoring.
- Define patterns for AI on the data platform, including Snowflake Cortex AI and Snowpark ML, and for real-time inference using event streaming.
- Assess build versus buy, managed versus self-hosted, and which AI pattern (if any) fits the problem, with clear cost, risk and value trade-offs.
- Partner with Security, Cyber and Risk on AI-specific threats, such as prompt injection, data leakage and model supply-chain risk.
- Advise sponsors and delivery leads on scope, sequencing and architecture risk across concurrent AI initiatives.
- Mentor architects and engineers to build AI architecture capability.
Essential
- At least 7 years in solution or enterprise architecture, including recent hands-on experience designing and deploying AI/ML solutions in production on AWS (for example, Amazon Bedrock, Bedrock Agent Core, SageMaker AI).
- Practical depth in generative and agentic AI patterns: RAG, fine-tuning, agent frameworks, evaluation, guardrails and inference cost management.
- Experience with MLOps and model lifecycle management within broader program governance.
- Strong data management foundations, including data quality, master and reference data, lineage and cataloguing, and an understanding of how these affect model accuracy, bias and reliability.
- A working understanding of the Australian Privacy Principles (including cross-border disclosure) and Australian Government AI guidance, and how these translate into architecture controls.
- The ability to explain AI trade-offs, such as hallucination risk, RAG versus fine-tuning, and cost, to executive audiences in plain language.
- Sound judgement under ambiguity and experience working in a large matrix organisation across agile and traditional delivery.
- Knowledge of TOGAF or an equivalent framework.
Desirable
- Snowflake experience, including Cortex AI (LLM functions, Cortex Analyst, Cortex Search) and Snowpark ML.
- Experience with event streaming (Kafka or Confluent) for real-time inference and model triggering.
- Experience with Alation or a similar data catalogue.
- Background in aviation, transport or another regulated, safety-critical industry.
