Quick Overview
Job Description
Senior Java Engineer – Financial Services
£70,000 – £115,000 + 20% bonus
London – Hybrid (1 day per week onsite)
Are you a strong, hands-on Java Engineer with experience building high-performance, distributed systems within Banking or Financial Services?
We're hiring on behalf of a leading FinTech consultancy that designs and delivers business-critical platforms for some of the world's largest financial institutions.
Previously we've been particularly focused on engineers coming directly from payments, but we're now keen to speak with strong Java Engineers from across the wider Financial Services market. This could include Banking, Payments, Cards/Merchant Acquiring, Trading, Capital Markets, Investment Banking or other high-volume financial platforms.
The most important thing is your technical engineering capability.
You'll join a highly skilled engineering team working on complex, event-driven platforms where resilience, scalability and correctness really matter. You'll remain hands-on with the code while working alongside experienced engineers, architects and client teams to deliver large-scale solutions into Tier 1 financial institutions.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop high-performance applications using modern Java and Spring Boot.
- Build scalable, event-driven microservices and distributed systems.
- Develop asynchronous, message-driven applications using technologies such as Kafka.
- Work with MongoDB and other modern data technologies across high-volume platforms.
- Design clean, maintainable APIs and contribute to wider system design.
- Work closely with engineers, architects and client teams to solve complex technical problems.
- Take ownership of software through development, testing and delivery into production.
- Contribute to technical design discussions, code reviews and engineering best practices.
- Work within Agile engineering teams using practices including TDD/BDD and CI/CD.
What We're Looking For
Technical strength is particularly important for this role. We're looking for engineers with a strong understanding of Java fundamentals, rather than simply experience working within a Java-based environment.
Ideally you'll have:
- Excellent commercial Java experience, ideally Java 17+.
- Strong knowledge of core Java and its underlying fundamentals.
- Strong commercial experience with Spring / Spring Boot and microservices.
- Good commercial experience with Apache Kafka and event-driven architectures.
- Commercial experience with MongoDB or strong experience with comparable NoSQL databases.
- Experience designing and building distributed, highly available systems.
- Strong understanding of REST APIs and asynchronous/message-driven architectures.
- Experience with TDD/BDD, automated testing and modern CI/CD practices.
- Experience working within Banking, Financial Services or FinTech.
Previous payments experience is beneficial but no longer essential. We're equally interested in technically strong engineers coming from areas such as cards/merchant payments, trading, capital markets, investment banking and wider banking technology.
What's On Offer
- £70,000 – £115,000 basic salary (DOE)
- 20% annual bonus
- Hybrid working – 1 day per week in London
- Work on complex, business-critical platforms for Tier 1 financial institutions.
- Exposure to large-scale, high-volume distributed systems.
- Opportunity to work directly with experienced engineering teams and financial-services clients.
- Strong engineering culture with a genuine emphasis on technical quality.
- Excellent long-term progression within a growing FinTech consultancy.
If you're a strong Java Engineer from a Financial Services background and enjoy solving complex problems across distributed, event-driven systems, we'd love to hear from you.
You don't need to be a payments specialist. If the Java engineering is strong, we're keen to talk.
