Job Description

Manages and directs the Legal Primary Source Documents team within the Research and Reference department. Writes and edits legal summaries and abstracts of source materials, including opinions, rulings, guidance, and procedures. Assigns source materials for summarizing. Must have excellent organizational skills and be able to produce copy with a strong emphasis on tight, accurate, and authoritative style. Facilitates and coordinates efforts within the team, the department, and with other departments on behalf of Research and Reference department goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned to meet editorial department objectives.

  1. Oversees and directs the Legal Primary Source Documents staff to ensure that deadlines are met, quality is maintained, and staff is working appropriate schedules.
  2. Supervises subordinate staff, including hiring recommending raises, disciplinary actions, and termination.
  3. Coordinates with other teams and/or departments on special projects requiring editorial expertise and assistance.
  4. Trains and onboards new members of the Legal Primary Source Documents staff. Updates all team procedures and keeps team members apprised of changes to editorial standards or policies.
  5. Writes summaries of tax-related federal court cases, regulations, public comments on regulations, guidance, administrative rulings, news releases, and legislation pertaining to tax policy and law.
  6. Assists in the handling of FOIA documents, state and global archival materials, and other primary source documents as needed.
  7. Works with other teams and departments to determine document classifications and workflows needed to incorporate new primary source materials.
  8. Enters information in the Content Management System, according to established procedures.
  9. Adheres to established publication deadlines and company style guidelines.
  10. Keeps abreast of current events through pertinent literature, media, and contacts with government officials, tax professionals, industry groups, and others.
  11. Alerts editorial staff about newsworthy documents and developments.
  12. Edits for substance, style, and accuracy, conducts research as needed, ensures proper citation style.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Ability to apply knowledge of tax law and writing concepts in a flexible, appropriate manner to diverse media and formats.
  • Complete knowledge of Tax Analysts products and services (may be acquired on the job)
  • Technical expertise in tax-related subject matter (generally acquired through education, but may also be acquired on the job)
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure in a team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain rapport.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Must display sound judgment.
  • Familiarity with other tax research materials and products is a bonus.
  • J.D. and/or LL.M. degree, or extensive knowledge of and experience with tax law.
  • Familiarity with governmental primary source materials.
  • Experience writing, editing, or copy editing print and electronic products preferred.
  • Experience in tax publishing preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of standard style manuals.
