In Home Chemistry Tutor

Thrive Education Partners is seeking an experienced In-Home Chemistry Tutor to work with a high school student in Williamson County, Tennessee. We welcome tutors who can reliably travel within the county, including Franklin, Brentwood, Nolensville, Spring Hill, and surrounding communities.

Strong chemistry tutoring depends on finding where the confusion actually begins. A student who cannot balance an equation or complete a stoichiometry problem is often stuck earlier than the problem in front of them, on unit conversions, ratios, algebra, or a shaky picture of what atoms and molecules are doing, and working more practice problems will not fix a gap the student cannot see. The tutor's job is to locate that gap, rebuild the understanding underneath it, and then connect it back to the coursework the student is responsible for in class.

The ideal candidate knows high school chemistry thoroughly and can explain the same concept several different ways until one lands. This person should be comfortable reviewing class notes, labs, and assessments to understand how the course is taught, teaching in a way that supports that approach, and helping the student build the habits and confidence to work through problems independently between sessions.

What You'll Do

• Review the student's class materials, notes, labs, and recent assessments before and throughout the engagement.
• Identify the specific concepts or math skills behind the student's difficulty.
• Reteach core concepts clearly, using models, visuals, and real-world examples where they help.
• Guide the student through problem-solving step by step, then gradually release responsibility.
• Support homework, lab reports, and preparation for quizzes, tests, and exams.
• Strengthen the math skills chemistry depends on, including unit conversions, proportional reasoning, and algebra.
• Build study habits and test-preparation strategies suited to a science course.
• Track progress against class performance and adjust the focus of sessions as the course moves forward.
• Communicate regularly with the family and Thrive about progress and upcoming priorities.

Our Approach

For this role, that means a tutor who teaches alongside the classroom rather than around it. You'll follow the course's sequence and methods, anticipate upcoming units, and use your sessions both to close gaps and to help the student walk into class prepared, so that chemistry becomes a subject they can manage with growing independence.

We're Looking for Someone Who...

• Has a bachelor's degree in chemistry, a related science, or science education.
• Has experience teaching or tutoring high school chemistry.
• Understands the full scope of a high school chemistry course, from atomic structure and bonding through stoichiometry, gases, solutions, and reactions.
• Can explain abstract concepts in several ways and recognize which explanation is working.
• Can diagnose whether an error is conceptual, mathematical, or procedural.
• Brings patience and steady encouragement to a student who may find the subject frustrating.
• Values reading class materials first and teaching in a way that supports the course.
• Communicates clearly and professionally with families.
• Can commit to a consistent weekly schedule through the school year.

Preferred Qualifications

• Teaching license or certification in chemistry or science
• Classroom experience teaching high school chemistry
• Experience with honors or AP chemistry
• Experience supporting students with learning differences, attention challenges, or math anxiety
• Experience teaching study skills and executive functioning alongside content
• Experience in private tutoring or another 1:1 learning environment

Compensation

• $50–$90/hour, commensurate with experience, credentials, and subject-matter expertise
• Competitive compensation, with opportunities for rate increases based on experience, performance, and continued work with Thrive

Logistics

• Location: In-home, Williamson County, Tennessee
• Schedule: One to two sessions per week, after school
