Job Description

Structural Stick Welder | Travel Contract | Apple Grove, WV | $45–$60/hr + Per Diem

Mural Group Industrial is hiring Structural Stick Welders for a travel contract at a major steel manufacturing facility in Apple Grove, West Virginia. The project is expected to run 3 or more months with real potential to extend well beyond that. Per diem applies. This is a start-now opportunity.

The Project

You will be part of a crew of 16 welders modifying four large square structural steel silos on-site at an active steel plant. The silos are currently lying on their sides on the ground, which puts the working wall at 12 to 14 feet in height. The work happens in two phases per silo: first, weld new external L-profile stiffener ribs on the outside of the structure; then, remove existing internal ribs to leave a smooth interior face.

Total welding scope across all four silos is approximately 1,854 feet. The base material is ASTM A572 Grade 60 structural carbon steel, 3/8 to 7/16 inch thick. Welding is intermittent -- you weld a 4-inch segment, leave a gap, move along, and weld again. This is standard technique for structural plate work where continuous welds would cause heat-induced bowing and distortion. Corners require L-profile stiffeners to be tied in at 90-degree joints. The primary working position is flat-vertical. No overhead welding is required on this job. Aerial lifts will be used; some work will be above 6 feet. Weld inspection is by magnetic particle testing. Welding procedure specifications (WPS) are provided by the client.

What You Need

  • Active stick welding (SMAW) experience -- this is the confirmed and required process for this project. MIG-only or TIG-only welders will not be considered.

  • Structural carbon steel plate welding background -- stiffeners, gussets, fabrication plate, or similar structural applications. Process pipe experience does not substitute for plate experience.

  • Genuine comfort with intermittent weld technique and an understanding of why continuous welds are not used on structural plate modification work

  • 3G (vertical position) comfort -- this is the dominant working position on this project

  • Electrode knowledge in structural stick: E7018, E6010, and/or E6011 are the standard rods for this type of work

  • Ability to work on aerial lifts at heights above 6 feet

  • Willingness to travel and commit to the project for 3 or more months -- per diem applies, this is a national travel pool search

  • Ability to pass a 7-year background check and both urine and hair drug screening -- required by the facility, non-negotiable

Certified Welding Inspectors (CWI)

Two of the 16 positions on this crew are reserved for candidates with a current AWS Certified Welding Inspector credential. If you hold an active CWI, note it clearly in your application. CWI candidates are prioritized and compensated at the top of the pay range.

What We Provide

  • Welding machines provided on site by the client

  • You supply your own hood, gloves, and personal PPE

  • Per diem for travel and lodging

  • $45 to $60 per hour depending on your background and electrode depth -- rate is negotiable for strong candidates

Site Logistics

The facility has parking approximately half a mile from the work area. Workers will drop tools at the work zone and park in an overflow lot. Carpool coordination among the crew is encouraged. You will be fully briefed on logistics before your start date.
