Job Description

Software Systems Engineer Principal (Edifecs Platform Operations Lead)
Location: Remote
Description
The Software Systems Engineer Principal serves as the Edifecs Platform Operations Lead, providing technical and operational leadership for the Edifecs application support organization. This role is responsible for ensuring platform stability, scalability, security, compliance, and alignment with business and technology roadmaps.
The successful candidate will provide hands-on technical oversight of Edifecs architecture and operations; lead platform modernization, performance, and cloud-scaling initiatives; manage staffing and operational priorities; and collaborate across product, architecture, vendor, cloud, DevSecOps, EDI analyst, and business teams. Consistent with the Development Manager format, this description emphasizes technical leadership, team coordination, project execution, and cross-functional alignment.
Job Responsibilities
  • Lead the Edifecs application support organization, establishing operational priorities, managing staffing needs, and ensuring reliable execution of production support activities.
  • Guide architecture decisions, platform modernization efforts, AWS cloud scalability initiatives, high-availability strategies, and performance-improvement activities.
  • Provide technical direction for the configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of Edifecs XEServer, XEngine, TPM, EDI Gateway, SpecBuilder, and related platform modules.
  • Support and guide EDI Analysts in the development, deployment, and optimization of Edifecs processing rules, routing logic, maps, validation rules, and batch-processing workflows.
  • Analyze and resolve complex EDI transaction-processing issues, including mapping defects, validation failures, functional errors, partner-specific rejection patterns, batch-job failures, and throughput degradation.
  • Lead root-cause analysis activities for critical platform incidents and implement corrective and preventive actions to improve service reliability and transaction quality.
  • Manage and optimize system logging, JVM tuning, memory utilization, certificate and keystore configurations, and platform-monitoring capabilities.
  • Support and coordinate release deployments, environment refreshes, platform patching, version upgrades, rollback planning, and post-implementation validation.
  • Establish and maintain operational dashboards, alerting mechanisms, and reporting to proactively identify performance degradation, processing failures, and capacity risks.
  • Ensure Edifecs platform operations support applicable compliance, audit, security, trading-partner governance, and healthcare data-protection requirements.
  • Collaborate with EDI Analysts, DevSecOps Engineers, cloud infrastructure teams, enterprise architects, product teams, Edifecs vendors, and business stakeholders to resolve dependencies and deliver roadmap objectives.
  • Communicate technical architecture decisions, operational risks, performance trade-offs, and modernization recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, operational runbooks, migration plans, troubleshooting guides, and deployment procedures.
  • Support Agile delivery practices, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, issue management, and workflow tracking through JIRA or comparable tools.

Required Skills
  • Deep, hands-on experience administering and supporting the Edifecs platform in enterprise or healthcare transaction-processing environments.
  • Strong knowledge of EDI X12 transaction standards and healthcare EDI workflows, including 270/271 Eligibility and Benefit Inquiry/Response and 278 Health Care Services Review transactions.
  • Demonstrated experience with Edifecs platform architecture and operational behavior, including:
    • XEServer: Orchestration, batch flows, execution contexts, and processing control.
    • XEngine: Validation, rulesets, canonical structures, and transaction processing.
    • TPM: Trading-partner configuration, route management, agreements, and partner onboarding.
    • EDI Gateway: Transaction visibility, audit capabilities, search, exception analysis, and reprocessing.
    • SpecBuilder: Implementation-guide definitions, map development, and specification management.
  • Experience managing EDI integration and interface operations across inbound and outbound connectivity methods, including AS2, SFTP, FTPS, HTTPS, API-based integrations, and gateway services.
  • Strong troubleshooting and root-cause-analysis skills involving transaction failures, mapping and alignment defects, validation errors, trading-partner rejections, batch-processing failures, and performance bottlenecks.
  • Experience with job-throughput optimization, engine performance tuning, JVM tuning, memory management, high availability, failover orchestration, and operational monitoring.
  • Strong AWS cloud experience, including EC2 instance sizing, operating-system tuning, storage I/O analysis, endpoint configuration, routing, firewall coordination, network-path troubleshooting, and SSL/TLS certificate lifecycle management.
  • Proficiency with Git and GitHub, including branching strategies, pull requests, code reviews, and collaborative development workflows.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools, including Ansible and/or Terraform.
  • Working knowledge of compliance, audit, security, and trading-partner governance practices applicable to healthcare EDI operations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical architecture decisions and trade-offs to business and executive stakeholders.
  • Experience translating business reporting and operational requirements into technical data models, system configurations, dashboards, and implementation plans.
  • Ability to drive ambiguous technical and architectural decisions to timely resolution with limited direction.
  • Experience using Agile methodologies, including Scrum and/or Kanban, and work-management tools such as JIRA.
  • Strong documentation discipline, including development and maintenance of architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, migration runbooks, operational procedures, and support documentation.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance is required.

Desired Skills and Experience
  • Experience supporting healthcare payer, pharmacy benefit manager (PBM), clearinghouse, pharmacy, or related healthcare operations environments.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA requirements and the implementation of secure cloud data architecture for protected health information.
  • Experience working with DevSecOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, cloud operations, release automation, and environment-management processes.
  • AWS certification is preferred.
  • Experience leading application support teams, technical operations teams, or cross-functional engineering teams in a complex enterprise environment.
  • Familiarity with Edifecs vendor-management processes, platform upgrade planning, roadmap development, and modernization initiatives.

Education and Experience
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline required.
  • Edifecs certification required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in EDI, healthcare technology, enterprise application operations, software engineering, data engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting large-scale enterprise applications in AWS cloud environments.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical operations, platform support, architecture, modernization, or engineering-delivery initiatives.
