Our client is seeking an experienced HSE Leader to provide interim leadership and strategic direction for its Health, Safety, and Environmental operations at a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Kansas.
The site has transitioned from an R&D-focused operation into a manufacturing environment over the past five years, and its HSE function is still developing. The current team has strong safety expertise but would benefit from a leader with a stronger environmental compliance and environmental program implementation background.
This consultant will step in to lead and mentor the existing HSE team, maintain momentum on critical site initiatives, and help establish and strengthen environmental programs while the client fills a permanent leadership position.
A key area of focus will be supporting wastewater treatment initiatives, including efforts to bring the site's wastewater treatment operations online. The ideal candidate will have previous experience as an HSE Manager, Associate Director, or Director, with the ability to provide immediate leadership in a regulated manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide interim leadership and direction for the site's HSE team, ensuring continuity of operations and progress against established priorities and project roadmaps.
- Assess existing environmental compliance programs, identify gaps, and support the development and implementation of environmental procedures, controls, and improvement initiatives.
- Provide environmental expertise related to wastewater treatment, including supporting the implementation and operational readiness of wastewater treatment systems.
- Lead and mentor HSE professionals, leveraging the team's existing safety expertise while strengthening environmental capabilities.
- Support environmental compliance activities involving applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including wastewater, waste management, permitting, and reporting requirements.
- Partner with site leadership, Engineering, Facilities, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to advance HSE initiatives and environmental improvement projects.
- Provide HSE leadership within a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment, including an understanding of sterile manufacturing operations and associated safety and environmental considerations.
- Support incident investigations, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Monitor HSE performance, identify compliance risks, and recommend practical improvements.
- Support regulatory inspections, internal audits, and environmental compliance assessments.
- Maintain and strengthen the site's safety culture while helping develop a more mature and sustainable environmental compliance program.
- Provide strategic guidance and hands-on leadership to ensure critical HSE activities continue progressing during the interim assignment.
Required Qualifications
- Significant experience in Health, Safety, and Environmental leadership within pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or another highly regulated manufacturing environment.
- Previous experience as an HSE Manager, Senior HSE Manager, Associate Director, or Director, with demonstrated responsibility for leading and developing teams.
- Strong environmental compliance background, preferably including environmental program development and implementation.
- Experience supporting wastewater treatment operations, wastewater compliance, or environmental infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated ability to step into an existing organization, assess priorities, guide teams, and drive initiatives forward with minimal ramp-up time.
- Strong understanding of environmental regulations and compliance requirements applicable to US manufacturing operations.
- Experience collaborating with Manufacturing, Engineering, Facilities, Quality, and site leadership.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, coaching, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting environmental program implementation at a developing or expanding manufacturing site.
- Experience bringing wastewater treatment systems online, supporting startup activities, or improving existing wastewater operations.
- Pharmaceutical manufacturing experience, particularly within sterile or aseptic manufacturing environments.
- Experience transitioning facilities from R&D or pilot operations into full-scale commercial manufacturing.
- Experience improving environmental compliance programs where existing processes and infrastructure are still being established.
- Previous interim leadership or consulting experience.
- Broad HSE experience combined with deeper technical expertise in environmental compliance.
