Lead Java Cloud Engineer
Location: Chicago, IL (60661) – Hybrid (2–3 days onsite/week)
Contract Duration: 13 Months (High probability of extension)
About the Role
Join an enterprise digital engineering team responsible for architecting and deploying the next generation of our global manufacturing cloud platform. As the Lead Java Cloud Engineer, you will drive core backend architecture, build resilient data pipelines, and provide hands-on technical guidance to a distributed team of engineers.
 
This role blends deep hands-on development in modern Java (Java 17) and AWS with technical mentorship, code quality governance, and distributed system design.

What You Will Do
  • Architect & Code: Design, build, and deploy mission-critical backend microservices and streaming applications using Java 17, AWS, and Slick/SQL.
  • Lead & Mentor: Serve as the technical lead for distributed development squads; run code reviews, mentor junior and mid-level engineers, and establish high code-quality benchmarks.
  • Scale Cloud Infrastructure: Implement resilient data processing solutions utilizing AWS Kinesis, DynamoDB, SQS, SNS, and secure IAM/KMS frameworks.
  • Ensure High Availability: Architect fault-tolerant systems engineered to meet high-reliability enterprise SLAs, driving integration and automated acceptance testing.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Translate complex business requirements into scalable technical roadmaps in close partnership with product owners and enterprise architects.
     

What You Bring

  • 12+ years of hands-on software development experience with enterprise backend Java applications.
  • 3+ years in a technical lead capacity directing onshore/offshore or geographically dispersed engineering teams.
  • Modern Java Expertise: Production mastery of Java 17+, concurrency, and modern RESTful API architectures.
  • AWS Cloud Native: Real-world implementation experience with IAM, Kinesis, DynamoDB, SQS, SNS, API Gateway, and KMS.
  • Database & Query Performance: Advanced proficiency in SQL queries and modern database mapping tools (experience with Slick is a major plus).
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field (Master’s preferred).
