DEPARTMENT: Information Technology Division

AGENCY: Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT)

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) plans, establishes, maintains, improves, and promotes public transportation services as well as freight transportation systems in the Commonwealth of Virginia. DRPT also strategically manages demand to provide effective and efficient transportation choices for the citizens of the Commonwealth.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

DRPT is seeking a qualified Database Administrator to provide comprehensive database application support services across the agency. Serving as an assistant agency Database Administrator, this role provides technical support to project managers within the IT Division, manages servers, and conducts routine database maintenance. The ideal candidate will collaborate with agency staff across all levels and external partners to gather project requirements and deliver reliable database solutions.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Database Administration & Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance, optimization, monitoring, and administrative tasks on agency Microsoft SQL Server environments.

·         Server Management & Support: Manage servers to ensure optimal system performance, security, and operational reliability.

·         Reporting & Query Development: Design, build, and maintain reports using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and write efficient T-SQL queries.

·         Code Maintenance: Troubleshoot, update, and maintain existing database code and modules developed by internal team members.

·         Technical Support & Problem Resolution: Investigate, mitigate, and resolve database-related technical issues while providing end-user technical support.

·         Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with IT project managers, internal staff, and external agencies to translate formal business requirements into functioning database modules.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

·         Progressively responsible experience with Microsoft SQL Server, including hands-on experience with SSRS and T-SQL programming.

·         Proven ability to troubleshoot, maintain, and refactor code written by other developers.

·         Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills to mitigate technical issues effectively.

·         Demonstrated track record of rapidly adapting to new systems, software, and procedures.

·         Experience providing direct end-user technical support and training.

·         Clear, concise written and verbal communication skills.

·         Ability to work both independently with minimal oversight and collaboratively in a team setting.

 

Preferred Qualifications

·         Experience with server and system administration within a government environment.

·         Hands-on application development experience using .NET Standard 4.8+ and Visual Basic.

·         Web technology exposure: ASP.NET (VB/C#), ASP, HTML/HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, AJAX, and JSON.

·         Experience working with Commonwealth of Virginia IT systems and VITA standards.

·         Familiarity with Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft Power Platform (Power Apps, DAX).

·         Experience across the Full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).

·         Background in installing, supporting, and troubleshooting hardware, software, and peripherals.
