Job Description

Role Overview

We are looking for a network engineer to join Etsy's IT Engineering team on a 6-month contract. This role exists to provide steady-state network operations coverage across our office locations, giving our senior network engineer the focused time needed to lead active platform migrations and complex infrastructure projects.

You will handle the day-to-day health and maintenance of our office networks: monitoring, routine changes, hardware upkeep, ticket resolution, and hands-on migration support. You will work closely with our senior network engineer, who will provide technical direction, escalation support, and context on our environment.

This is a great fit for someone with a solid networking foundation who is looking to grow in a real enterprise environment, work alongside an experienced engineer, and take ownership of meaningful operational work from day one.

Key Responsibilities

Network Health and Monitoring

  • Perform daily health checks across all office sites (Brooklyn, Dublin, CDMX) using available monitoring tools.
  • Respond to and triage monitoring alerts; escalate to the senior network engineer when issues exceed scope.
  • Track open issues, document findings, and maintain accurate ticket status in Jira.
  • Flag patterns or recurring issues to the senior engineer for root-cause investigation.

Routine Network Changes

  • Execute approved switch port configurations, VLAN assignments, and access changes.
  • Manage DHCP reservations, IP assignments, and related network provisioning tasks — including working within Linux-based environments and DHCP platforms (experience with Kea DHCP is a strong plus).
  • Support printer, IoT, and endpoint onboarding, including port config, MAC-based reservations, and VLAN placement.
  • Process change requests through proper channels (GitHub PRs, Ansible workflows, change tickets) with guidance from the senior engineer.

Hardware and Physical Maintenance

  • Perform on-site inspections of network equipment in our Brooklyn office and coordinate with remote site contacts for Dublin and CDMX.
  • Reseat, replace, or escalate hardware issues (switches, APs, power supplies, fan modules) based on monitoring alerts.
  • Assist with device inventory, asset tracking, and physical labeling.

Migration and Project Support

  • Pre-stage switch and AP configurations in Meraki Dashboard and Cisco platforms ahead of scheduled maintenance windows.
  • Assist with validation testing during and after cutovers: connectivity, VLAN forwarding, uplinks, and critical service checks.
  • Be available to support after-hours maintenance windows on a scheduled basis (not on-call — planned in advance).
  • Document configuration changes and outcomes in shared runbooks after each maintenance event.

Documentation and Knowledge Building

  • Maintain and improve runbooks for common network tasks, triage procedures, and site-specific configurations.
  • Capture resolution steps in Jira tickets to build an institutional knowledge base.
  • Support handoff documentation so operational knowledge is retained beyond the contract period.

Required Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience in a network operations, network administration, or IT infrastructure role.
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Layer 2 switching: VLANs, trunk/access ports, port configuration, basic STP awareness.
    • DHCP: reservations, scopes, lease management; familiarity with Linux-based DHCP platforms (Kea DHCP experience is a strong differentiator).
    • Wireless: basic AP management, connectivity troubleshooting, understanding of WLCs or cloud-managed platforms.
    • Network monitoring tools: alert triage, dashboard review, basic log reading.
  • Working knowledge of Linux — comfortable navigating a Linux environment, reviewing logs, and executing commands at the CLI.
  • Familiarity with Cisco Catalyst, Meraki, or equivalent switching platforms.
  • CCNA required; active pursuit of CCNP or equivalent strongly preferred.
  • Comfortable working in a ticketing system (Jira or equivalent) to manage and document work.
  • Able to work on-site in Brooklyn and handle physical network hardware.
  • Clear communicator — able to escalate issues with context, not just symptoms.
  • Able to follow change control procedures and documented processes accurately.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Meraki Dashboard for switch or wireless management.
  • Familiarity with CheckMK, Grafana, or comparable network monitoring tools.
  • Exposure to Ansible or configuration management workflows.
  • Experience supporting multi-site environments.
  • Comfort onboarding quickly into an existing environment with incomplete documentation.
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving team where priorities shift with live incidents.

What Success Looks Like

The routine network queue moves without bottlenecking the senior engineer. Monitoring alerts get triaged quickly and escalated with context. Maintenance windows have a second set of hands that is prepared and useful. And by the end of the contract, the runbooks are better than when you started.

You won't own the hardest problems on day one — but you'll be trusted with real work, given clear direction, and have a direct line to an experienced engineer who wants you to succeed. If you do well, this contract has room to grow.
