Job Description

Our client is a leading research and scientific organisation with a highly specialised estate comprising research facilities, laboratories, offices and operational environments.

The organisation is currently strengthening its Health, Safety, Environment and Quality governance and requires an experienced interim consultant to support a focused six-month improvement programme.

  • Make a measurable impact by addressing high-risk, audit-identified gaps.
  • Work across a complex research, laboratory and Facilities Management environment.
  • Help establish consistent, legally defensible and audit-ready H&S standards across the organisation.
About Your New Job

As the Senior Health & Safety Consultant, you will lead a focused six-month programme to review, improve and embed Health & Safety governance across Facilities Management and Research Facilities.

You will:

  • Conduct structured gap analyses across Facilities Management and Research, prioritising outstanding external audit findings.
  • Review and improve arrangements relating to contractor management, RAMS, permit-to-work systems and auditability.
  • Draft and update clear, legally sound H&S policies and procedures.
  • Ensure revised policies align with the organisation's overarching H&S Policy and Arrangements.
  • Work with the HSEQ team to align procedures, controls and risk assessments with the organisation's EHS system.
  • Collaborate with operational managers and research facility leaders to ensure procedures are practical, proportionate and embedded.
  • Develop assurance mechanisms, including audit tools, KPIs and monitoring checks.
  • Present findings, recommendations and progress updates to senior stakeholders.
  • Deliver a complete, structured and audit-ready documentation set, together with a comprehensive handover report.

This is a hands-on, delivery-focused interim role requiring someone who can work independently, manage multiple priorities and deliver clearly defined outcomes within a fixed six-month timeframe.

What Skills You Need
  • A recognised Health & Safety qualification, such as a NEBOSH Diploma, combined with significant senior H&S experience.
  • Proven experience in a senior H&S consultancy, advisory or management role.
  • Experience within Facilities Management, research, higher education, laboratory or contractor-led environments.
  • Strong knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and CDM Regulations 2015.
  • Demonstrable experience in contractor management, RAMS review and approval, permit-to-work systems and H&S gap analysis.
  • Proven ability to draft and implement high-quality H&S policies and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to work independently to a deadline-led programme.
  • Experience with EHS management systems, Excel and Power BI would be advantageous.
  • CMIOSH or equivalent chartered status, along with ISO 45001, ISO 9001 or ISO 14001 experience, would be desirable.
What's on Offer
  • £500-£550 per day for a six-month interim assignment.
  • The opportunity to deliver a high-profile H&S improvement programme within a leading scientific and research environment.
  • A varied and influential role working with Facilities Management, research teams, senior stakeholders and the wider HSEQ function.
  • 37.5 hours per week.
  • Norwich-based location.
