Fleet Engineer

Position: Fleet Engineer

Location: Minneapolis, MN Onsite

Type of Employment: 12+ Months Contract

Role Description:

• 4+ years of experience managing Linux-based edge device fleets.
• Hands-on experience with fleet management tools like BalenaCloud, balenaCLI, metropolis and container-based deployments
• Strong experience with Docker containers and Docker Compose
• CI/CD pipeline implementation using tools such as GitLab CI/CD, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins
• Container image build, optimization, and deployment practices
• Version control using Git
• Strong Linux administration skills (Ubuntu, Debian, Raspberry Pi OS)
• Device troubleshooting, remote diagnostics, and log analysis
• Shell scripting (Bash)
• Network configuration and security for remote edge devices
• Python for automation, deployment tools, and monitoring
• API integration and automation scripting

Good-to-Have

• Experience integrating edge devices with cloud platforms such as:
• Azure IoT
• AWS IoT
• Google Cloud IoT
• Understanding of VPNs, firewalls, proxies, and secure communications
• Familiarity with MQTT, REST APIs, WebSockets
• Air-gapped/offline deployment strategies
• Kubernetes/K3s at the edge
• Device security, certificate management, and secure boot
• Observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack)
• Experience with ARM-based devices (Raspberry Pi, Jetson, etc.)

Responsibility of / Expectations from the Role

• Provision, configure, and onboard edge devices into BalenaCloud fleets.
• Manage device lifecycle activities including registration, updates, maintenance, and decommissioning.
• Deploy and monitor containerized applications across distributed edge device fleets.
• Configure fleet-wide environment variables, device settings, and application releases.
• Plan and execute OTA (Over-the-Air) software and firmware updates with minimal operational disruption.
