Job Description

The Drupal Web Developer owns day-to-day operations and maintenance of the public website. This person publishes new reports, data visualizations, and HTML content, and builds new templates or makes minor architecture changes when expanded content calls for them.

The role also carries the site's security and compliance posture: monthly Drupal core and security patching, module upgrades, bug fixes, and ongoing remediation of security and Section 508 accessibility findings. Every release moves through a controlled Change Request (CR) process that this developer manages from request to deployment.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on Drupal developer who is as comfortable shipping a content release on deadline as running a patch cycle or closing out a scan finding. They work well with federal statisticians and communications staff and explain technical tradeoffs in plain language.

Location: Primarily Remote

Responsibilities:

Content Publishing & Site Enhancement

  • Post new content, statistical reports, and data visualizations to the website in HTML and Drupal.
  • Design and build new Drupal templates, content types, views, and layouts as expanded content needs are identified.
  • Make minor information architecture changes (menus, taxonomy, navigation, page structure) in coordination with stakeholders.
  • Partner with content owners to turn draft reports and visual assets into accessible, web-ready pages.

Drupal Platform Operations & Maintenance

  • Apply monthly minor security patches and Drupal core updates to maintain the system's security posture.
  • Monitor Drupal core, contributed modules, themes, and PHP dependencies; plan and execute upgrades and enhancements, including major-version upgrades.
  • Manage all required software updates and dependency changes using Composer and version control.
  • Triage, troubleshoot, and resolve bugs and site issues reported by users, scans, or monitoring.

Change Request & Deployment Management

  • Manage the Change Request (CR) process for all deployments: prepare CRs, document scope and risk, and present changes for approval.
  • Plan and execute deployments across development, test/staging, and production environments.
  • Maintain release notes, rollback plans, and deployment documentation for every change.

Security & Accessibility (508) Compliance

  • Remediate security findings from vulnerability scans, code reviews, and assessments; support POA&M tracking.
  • Remediate Section 508 / WCAG accessibility findings across templates, content, and visualizations.
  • Test for security and accessibility on an ongoing basis, not only before releases.

Quality Assurance

  • Perform functional, regression, cross-browser, and responsive testing before each release.
  • Validate new content and visualizations for accuracy, rendering, links, and accessibility before publishing.
  • Document test results and defects, and verify fixes before closing them out.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of web development experience, including 3+ years building and maintaining production Drupal sites (Drupal 9/10 or later).
  • Hands-on experience applying Drupal core and contributed module security updates on a recurring schedule.
  • Strong PHP, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript and Git experience.
  • Experience building custom content types, views, templates, and themes, and making information architecture changes.
  • Working knowledge of Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA, with experience remediating findings from tools such as ANDI, axe, or WAVE.
  • Experience remediating security vulnerabilities from scan results.
  • Experience working within a formal change management / Change Request process, including deployment across dev, test, and production environments.
  • Experience performing QA: functional, regression, cross-browser, and responsive testing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting federal websites, ideally a statistical or data-publishing agency.
  • Experience embedding accessible data visualizations (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, D3, Highcharts) in Drupal pages.
  • Experience leading a Drupal major-version upgrade or migration.
  • Experience working in Agile / Scrum delivery with Jira or a similar tool.
  • Acquia Certified Drupal Developer, CPACC, or Trusted Tester (DHS Section 508) certification.
