Quick Overview
Job Description
The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) applies cutting-edge technology to operating a reliable electricity system, managing competitive markets for wholesale electricity, and planning for the Empire State's energy future. The NYISO takes pride in recruiting, developing and retaining highly talented individuals. Our co-op programs give young professionals the opportunity to gain a fundamental understanding of New York electricity markets, bulk electricity systems and how we plan for New York State’s energy future.
The NYISO is seeking a Power System Modeling Co-Op student to support the development, maintenance, and validation of short-circuit and dynamic models used in power system studies. The student will review and improve modeling processes, develop automation scripts, support model data collection and review, and assist with planning-database enhancements.
The student will also support the review of models for legacy inverter-based resources for inclusion in the short-circuit database used in future study-case development. Additional assignments may include an on-demand dynamic database builder, expanded model tracking, and improvements that strengthen connections among steady-state, dynamic, and master-tracking data. This work will support teams across System and Resource Planning and Operations that rely on accurate models and study cases.
Responsibilities
- Learn the processes used to develop, maintain, and validate short-circuit and dynamic power system models.
- Review existing modeling workflows and recommend opportunities for improvement.
- Develop scripts that automate recurring modeling or data-management activities.
- Support model-data collection, outreach, review, and validation.
- Assist with the implementation, maintenance, and improvement of planning databases.
- Review models for legacy inverter-based resources for inclusion in the short-circuit database.
- Support future short-circuit case development for system-planning studies.
- Contribute to the development of an on-demand dynamic database-building capability.
- Help expand model and process-tracking capabilities.
- Support improvements that connect steady-state, dynamic, and master-tracking data.
- Identify and resolve data-quality or process issues.
- Document scripts, databases, modeling procedures, findings, and recommendations.
- Collaborate with Reliability Studies, Generation Integration, Interconnection Studies, and Interconnection Coordination.
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a senior-level Bachelor’s, Master’s, or doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Concentration or demonstrated interest in power systems engineering is preferred.
- Experience with scripting and automation.
- Interest in power system modeling, system planning, or electrical-grid analysis.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work with technical data, models, and databases.
- Attention to detail and commitment to model and data quality.
- Ability to document technical processes and analytical work clearly.
- Ability to learn specialized modeling tools and processes.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
