AECOM have an exciting opportunity for an CDM Principal Designer to join our Environment & Energy SH&E Team. As we are a national team this position can be based at any of our main office locations, including Manchester, Basingstoke, Glasgow, Cambridge and Bristol.
The CDM Principal Designer will work in collaboration with our GGP CDM Lead and will be instrumental in fostering positive engagement, providing support, advice, and guidance, as well as disseminating CDM knowledge across our projects, advocating best practices and reinforcing our commitment to health, safety, and wellbeing in all that we do.
The role involves collaborating with our teams and clients to provide Principal Designer services on some of our largest energy infrastructure projects in the UK.
Here's what you'll do:
Be a Safety Champion: Function as a prominent advocate for health (including wellbeing), safety, and the environment, encouraging continuous improvement and innovation to cultivate and reinforce a mature safety culture in accordance with AECOM's policies, procedures, and SH&E strategies.
Be Proactive: The Principal Designer's role, along with our overarching SH&E strategy, is based on proactive engagement and execution. Our Principal Designers spearhead the pre-construction phase, champion risk mitigation, enhance communication and cooperation, and manage the transition from design to the construction phase, including the production of health and safety files, thereby delivering added value to our projects and clients.
Deliver Excellence: Ensure excellence and added value in every task, activity, and deliverable within the scope of your role. Strive for continuous enhancement of our methods, processes, and results.
Provide CDM Support, Advice & Guidance: Offer CDM counsel to Energy, project staff and clients to ensure the effective execution of our statutory duties and those of our clients, proactively and professionally addressing any legislative discrepancies.
One Team: Collaborate with colleagues and managers to form a cohesive team, fostering respect, support, and cooperation to attain our collective goals.
Management Systems Implementation – Advocate for the adherence to procedures and process requirements throughout your operational scope to foster compliance and bolster our safety culture.
SH&E Promotion – Support in the promotion of AECOM’s Safety for Life, Culture of Caring and Life Preserving Principles, to foster a safe, health and secure workplace.

Ready to push the limits of what's possible?
Here's what we're looking for:
- Design / engineering degree.
- Experience in Overhead lines and HV projects.
- Member of the Association of Project Safety.
- NEBOSH National or General Certificate, or similar health and safety qualification.
- Experience in delivering the Principal Designer role, ensuring effective and efficient delivery of duties under CDM on energy projects.
