Job Description

We are seeking a Lead or Staff Software Engineer who has built and operated AWS-based APIs, microservices, event-driven workflows and operational data services, to work on a team in Newport Beach, CA (secondary location will be Charlotte, NC). The candidate should also have made decisions or worked as an architect, needs to demonstrate how. The candidate must have personally developed production code, made AWS service-selection decisions, implemented Infrastructure as Code, and technically led other developers. Mainframe, CDC, insurance, and UI experience are valuable but not required.

The hiring manager is seeking a Lead Software Engineer with strong AWS expertise who can:

  • Lead and mentor a growing engineering team. The most important requirement is technical leadership.

  • Understand solution architecture and translate it into executable technical solutions.

  • Guide engineers, establish best practices, and set the technical direction.

  • Drive cloud and integration initiatives.

  • Act as a hands-on technical leader while also coaching less experienced team members.

The emphasis is on someone who has successfully led technical teams and can influence architecture, engineering practices, and delivery.

<>Secondary Objectives

While hands-on development is expected, the role is not intended to be a combination of multiple specialist positions (e.g., software engineer, DevOps engineer, integration engineer, and data engineer all in one).

The ideal candidate should:

  • Understand DevOps and infrastructure concepts well enough to collaborate with and influence DevOps practitioners.

  • Work effectively with infrastructure teams rather than own DevOps as a full-time function.

  • Contribute to integration and platform engineering efforts.

<>Data Engineering vs. Integration Focus

The manager is open to candidates whose strengths lean toward either:

  1. Data Engineering

  • Data ingestion and replication

  • Operational data stores

  • Data quality and movement

OR

  1. Integration & Orchestration Engineering

  • Event-driven architectures

  • API development

  • Platform engineering

  • Workflow orchestration and system integration

A candidate does not need to be equally strong in both areas. Strong expertise in one area with solid understanding of the other is acceptable, provided they bring strong lead software engineering and technical leadership capabilities.

<>Ideal Candidate Profile

A senior AWS-focused technical leader who:

  • Has proven experience leading engineering teams.

  • Can balance strategic architecture and hands-on implementation.

  • Excels at mentoring and guiding engineers.

  • Understands cloud, integration, and DevOps practices.

  • Can help build and mature a growing engineering organization.

  • Has depth in either data engineering or integration/orchestration, with working knowledge of the other domain
