The Asset Health & Remote Technical Specialist is a customer-embedded, outcome-focused role within the Rio Tinto Operations Centre. It blends the capabilities of a remote Technical Advisor, Expert on Alert (EOA) specialist and fleet-health coordinator. The role works in partnership with Rio Tinto to continuously review locomotive condition and diagnostic information, identifies emerging risks, provides clear OEM-aligned recommendations, and works with Rio Tinto operations, maintenance and Wabtec field teams to bring actions to closure.

The role is designed to improve decision quality and speed. It does not replace Rio Tinto maintenance or operational accountability. Instead, it provides a single focal point who connects digital insight, locomotive domain expertise and frontline execution. Success is seen in fewer repeat failures, faster troubleshooting, stronger work scopes, dependable escalation and visible follow-through on fleet-health risks.

Where is the position located?

This is a Monday to Friday role, based in Perth, WA (near the Perth Airport).

What will your typical day look like?

  • Monitor locomotive asset health and fleet performance through remote diagnostic and condition monitoring systems.
  • Analyse locomotive faults, alarms and events to identify emerging issues and minimise operational impacts.
  • Provide expert technical advice and troubleshooting support to maintenance and operations teams.
  • Conduct root cause analysis of recurring failures and develop recommendations to improve reliability and availability.
  • Prioritise and coordinate critical fault investigations based on fleet risk, safety and production impacts.
  • Review operational and maintenance data to identify trends, degradation patterns and opportunities for proactive intervention.
  • Liaise with customers, field service personnel, engineering teams and maintenance providers to drive effective issue resolution.
  • Develop and communicate corrective action plans and monitor progress through to closure.
  • Support outage and incident response activities by providing technical guidance and recommendations.
  • Prepare asset health reports, performance insights and reliability metrics for customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives that improve locomotive performance, reliability and fleet availability.
  • Maintain compliance with safety, quality and engineering standards while supporting customer operational objectives.

What do we want to know about you?

Essential

  • Trade qualification, Diploma or Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronic or related engineering discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong experience in diesel-electric locomotive maintenance, troubleshooting, reliability or technical support.
  • Demonstrated capability in fault finding, diagnostics and root cause analysis.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, maintenance documentation and diagnostic data.
  • Experience working with operational, maintenance and engineering stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritise competing demands.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable

  • Experience with locomotive asset health, condition monitoring or predictive maintenance programs.
  • Knowledge of locomotive diagnostic and monitoring platforms.
  • Experience supporting heavy haul rail, mining or heavy industrial operations.
  • Familiarity with reliability-centred maintenance (RCM), FMEA or continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Customer-facing technical advisory or reliability engineering experience.
