Forward Deployed Engineer

About the Role
Optum Technology is seeking a highly skilled Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) to partner directly with healthcare clients and deliver AI-powered solutions that drive business transformation. This role combines consulting, solution architecture, and hands-on engineering to solve complex healthcare challenges using advanced technologies, including AI/ML, LLMs, cloud platforms, and intelligent automation.

Key Responsibilities

• Engage with healthcare payer and provider clients to understand business challenges and define AI-driven solutions.
• Lead discovery sessions, solution design workshops, and technical consulting engagements.
• Design, develop, and deploy production-grade AI applications, copilots, and automation solutions.
• Architect scalable, secure, and compliant systems integrating LLMs, ML models, APIs, and enterprise platforms.
• Translate business requirements into actionable technical roadmaps and measurable outcomes.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful deployment and adoption of solutions.
• Drive client success through end-to-end ownership, from problem definition to production deployment.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field.
• 8+ years of software engineering experience building cloud-native and distributed systems.
• 7+ years of consulting or client-facing experience delivering technology solutions.
• Hands-on experience with AI/ML, LLMs, prompt engineering, and model deployment.
• Strong expertise in cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform), APIs, and modern development frameworks.
• Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in a technical discipline.
• Healthcare domain expertise across payer or provider operations.
• Knowledge of healthcare data, interoperability, and regulatory requirements.
• Experience working in fast-paced, ambiguous environments with evolving client needs.
