Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Shopify Lead to drive the development, customization, integration, and ongoing enhancement of Shopify-based e-commerce platforms. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on expertise in Shopify store customization, custom app development, front-end technologies, webhook implementation, and third-party system integrations.

The candidate will work closely with business stakeholders, product teams, architects, and external technology partners to deliver scalable, secure, and high-performing e-commerce solutions. This role requires a combination of technical leadership, hands-on development, integration expertise, and the ability to guide development best practices.

Experience working with enterprise e-commerce environments and integrating Shopify with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Order Management Systems (OMS), Retail Management Systems (RMS), ERP, and other third-party platforms is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

1. Shopify Store Customization

  • Lead the customization and enhancement of Shopify storefronts to meet business and customer experience requirements.
  • Develop and maintain Shopify themes using Liquid, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and related front-end technologies.
  • Customize Shopify theme files, including templates, sections, snippets, layouts, and configuration files.
  • Work with Shopify Online Store 2.0 features, including sections, blocks, dynamic sources, metafields, metaobjects, and theme editor configurations.
  • Develop reusable storefront components and implement responsive, accessible, and cross-browser-compatible user interfaces.
  • Support multi-store, multi-country, multi-currency, and multi-language/localization requirements.
  • Optimize storefront performance, usability, accessibility, and SEO.
  • Collaborate with UX/UI designers, business teams, and product owners to translate requirements into technical solutions.

2. Custom Shopify App Development

  • Design, develop, deploy, and maintain custom Shopify applications to support business-specific requirements.
  • Build public apps and custom apps where applicable, using Shopify APIs, webhooks, and supported authentication mechanisms.
  • Develop server-side applications using technologies such as Node.js, TypeScript, Remix, or other suitable frameworks.
  • Integrate Shopify functionality with external applications, services, and enterprise platforms.
  • Work with Shopify Admin API, GraphQL Admin API, Storefront API, and relevant REST APIs where supported.
  • Implement secure authentication, authorization, access scopes, token management, and API rate-limit handling.
  • Design scalable application architectures that support high transaction volumes and peak shopping periods, including Black Friday and other promotional events.
  • Implement robust error handling, logging, monitoring, retry mechanisms, and data validation.
  • Follow development best practices for source control, testing, code reviews, deployment, and maintenance.

3. Front-End Development: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

  • Develop and maintain responsive storefront components using HTML5, modern CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Apply modern CSS techniques, including Flexbox, CSS Grid, custom properties, and responsive design principles.
  • Use vanilla JavaScript and suitable lightweight libraries to implement dynamic storefront functionality.
  • Customize Shopify themes and components while maintaining compatibility with Shopify's storefront architecture.
  • Use modern development tools and workflows, such as Git, GitHub/GitLab, Vite, and appropriate CSS tooling.
  • Troubleshoot cross-browser, mobile responsiveness, performance, and rendering issues.
  • Follow coding standards and ensure maintainable, reusable, and well-documented code.

4. Shopify Webhooks and Event-Driven Integrations

  • Configure, implement, and maintain Shopify webhooks for relevant business events, including orders, products, inventory, customers, and fulfillment.
  • Design reliable event-driven integrations between Shopify and downstream enterprise systems.
  • Validate webhook signatures and securely process incoming webhook requests.
  • Handle failed webhook deliveries, retries, duplicate events, and idempotent processing to maintain data integrity.
  • Implement asynchronous processing and queue-based workflows where appropriate.
  • Monitor webhook delivery failures, processing delays, and integration health.
  • Ensure reliable data synchronization and implement reconciliation processes when required.

5. Third-Party System Integrations

  • Design, develop, and maintain integrations between Shopify and enterprise systems, including:
    • Warehouse Management Systems (WMS)
    • Order Management Systems (OMS)
    • Retail Management Systems (RMS)
    • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems
    • Payment, shipping, tax, and fulfillment platforms
    • Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and other business applications
  • Implement integrations using Shopify APIs, webhooks, middleware, integration platforms, and third-party connectors.
  • Evaluate and configure Shopify apps or integration connectors when appropriate.
  • Build custom integration services when standard connectors do not meet business requirements.
  • Manage data synchronization for orders, inventory, products, customers, pricing, fulfillment, and returns.
  • Troubleshoot API errors, data mismatches, synchronization failures, and performance issues.
  • Collaborate with vendors and enterprise application teams to ensure reliable end-to-end integration flows.

6. Technical Leadership and Delivery

  • Own technical design and implementation for Shopify development initiatives.
  • Translate functional and business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance, code reviews, development standards, and mentoring to developers.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams, business stakeholders, architects, QA, DevOps, and integration partners.
  • Support solution design, estimation, sprint planning, testing, deployment, and production releases.
  • Establish standards for code quality, security, performance, monitoring, and maintainability.
  • Identify technical risks, resolve complex production issues, and recommend continuous improvements.

Required Technical Skills

  • Understanding of application scalability, performance optimization, troubleshooting, and production support.
  • Ability to lead technical discussions and work independently in a hands-on development role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Shopify Plus and enterprise-scale e-commerce implementations.
  • Experience with Shopify Online Store 2.0, metafields, metaobjects, reusable sections, and blocks.
  • Experience with Node.js, TypeScript, Remix, or other suitable frameworks for Shopify app development.
  • Experience with middleware, iPaaS solutions, message queues, and enterprise integration patterns.
  • Experience supporting high-volume e-commerce events and peak-season traffic.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, application monitoring, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience supporting multi-store, multi-region, multi-currency, and localized storefronts.
