Orthopedic Technician

Put your orthopedic skills to work helping patients regain comfort, mobility, and confidence. You’ll provide hands-on clinical support in an orthopedic clinic where casting, bracing, wound care, and patient education are part of the everyday workflow.

As an Orthopedic Technician, you’ll work alongside physicians and nurses to support orthopedic care within a military healthcare environment. You’ll prepare and apply casts, splints, braces, and other orthopedic devices; assist with procedures and wound care; and help patients understand how to safely use and care for their orthopedic equipment.

Employment Type: Full-time

Material Employment Conditions:

• Participate in a rotating on-call schedule for one week, Monday through Sunday, no more than once every four weeks
• Respond by telephone within 10 minutes of an on-call notification
• When called back onsite, arrive within 45 minutes after responding or within 60 minutes of the original call

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 6:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., consisting of a nine-hour shift with a one-hour unpaid meal period. Regularly scheduled services will not exceed 40 hours per week.

Compensation:

• Base pay: $22.92–$25.47 per hour
• Health and welfare benefit: Up to $5.42 per hour, in accordance with the Service Contract Act
• On-call rate: $8.00 per hour
• Callback rate: $27.47 per hour
• Paid leave: 80 hours of PTO, 56 hours of sick leave, and 11 paid holidays

Key Responsibilities:

• Fit and apply casts, splints, braces, crutches, and other orthopedic appliances and soft goods
• Assist physicians and nurses with wound care, aspirations, minor surgical procedures, fracture reductions, dressing changes, and the removal of sutures, casts, and splints
• Educate patients on cast and traction care and the safe use of orthopedic devices, while supporting appropriate education for patients and their families
• Maintain clean, organized, and well-stocked cast and supply areas, including coordinating special equipment and supply needs
• Support clinic information systems and data-collection activities while protecting patient privacy and confidentiality
• Follow established clinical, safety, quality, and emergency-response procedures while remaining current with orthopedic care practices and supplies

Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent, with additional training or education related to orthopedic care
• At least one year of related experience in an accredited hospital within the past 24 months, resulting in familiarity with orthopedic hospital or clinic routines and procedures, including orthopedic trauma, pediatrics, hand, foot and ankle, sports, and/or spine care.
• Current national certification through the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals or the National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Technologists
• Current Healthcare Provider BLS certification meeting American Heart Association or American Red Cross guidelines
• Knowledge of patient privacy and advocacy, customer relations, HIPAA, and applicable AAAHC, Joint Commission, and clinical practice standards
