Mainframe Developer

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Developer to design, develop, enhance, and maintain enterprise-grade applications running on IBM mainframe environments. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS, and VSAM, along with solid knowledge of batch processing, online transaction processing, production support, and software development lifecycle practices.

The candidate will work closely with business analysts, application architects, QA teams, and other developers to deliver reliable, scalable, and high-performing mainframe solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, enhance, test, debug, and maintain applications using COBOL.
• Develop and maintain JCL for batch processing, job scheduling, and production workflows.
• Design and develop applications using DB2 databases, including SQL queries, stored procedures, and performance optimization.
• Develop and support CICS online transaction processing applications.
• Work with VSAM files, including KSDS, ESDS, and RRDS datasets.
• Analyze business and technical requirements and translate them into detailed technical solutions.
• Perform application design, coding, unit testing, integration testing, and defect resolution.
• Analyze existing legacy applications and recommend enhancements or modernization opportunities.
• Troubleshoot application, batch, database, and production issues.
• Perform root-cause analysis and implement permanent corrective actions.
• Monitor and support batch jobs and resolve job failures, abends, and data issues.
• Develop efficient and reusable COBOL programs and supporting utilities.
• Optimize DB2 queries and application processing for performance and scalability.
• Participate in code reviews and ensure compliance with development standards.
• Prepare technical specifications, application documentation, and support documentation.
• Coordinate with QA teams for test planning, test execution, and defect resolution.
• Support application deployments and production releases.
• Participate in on-call or after-hours production support when required.
• Work with cross-functional teams during application upgrades, migrations, and modernization initiatives.
• Follow SDLC, change-management, source-control, and quality-assurance processes.
• Identify opportunities to improve application reliability, performance, maintainability, and automation.

Required Technical Skills

• COBOL – Strong hands-on development experience.
• JCL – Job creation, execution, troubleshooting, and batch processing.
• DB2 – SQL development, database design concepts, queries, and performance tuning.
• CICS – Online transaction processing and CICS application development/support.
• VSAM – File creation, processing, and troubleshooting.
• Strong understanding of mainframe batch and online processing.
• Experience with production support and application troubleshooting.
• Knowledge of SDLC and software development methodologies.
• Experience with mainframe debugging and performance analysis.

Education & Experience

• Bachelor''''s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
• 10+ years of experience in mainframe application development, with strong hands-on experience in COBOL, JCL, DB2, and CICS.
• Experience working on large-scale enterprise applications.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and troubleshooting skills.
