Heritage Electronics Technician

For almost 50 years, Williams F1 Team has been at the forefront of one of the fastest sports on the planet, being one of the top three most successful teams in history competing in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. With an almost unrivalled heritage of engineering and racing F1 cars and unforgettable eras that demonstrate it is a force to be reckoned with, the British squad boasts 16 F1 World Championship titles to its name.  

Since its foundation in 1977 by the eminent, late Sir Frank Williams and engineering pioneer Sir Patrick Head, the team has won nine Constructors’ Championships, in association with Cosworth, Honda and Renault. Its roll call of drivers is legendary, with its seven Drivers’ Championship trophies being lifted by true icons of the sport: Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve. The team has made history before and is out to make it again with a long-term mission to evolve and return to the front of the grid. 

Atlassian Williams F1 Heritage is responsible for preserving and running the Formula One cars that form our rich history, ensuring they continue to be seen and heard by fans around the world rather than sitting behind ropes in a museum. With a number of exciting projects underway and a growing events calendar, including a new multi-year customer programme launching next year, the team is continuing to expand.

As a result, we have an exciting opportunity within our Heritage Electronics Group. The team currently consists of two specialists who share responsibility for software, control systems, wiring and vehicle configuration. As the third member of the team, you will take ownership of wiring, testing and calibration activities, helping to increase capacity and enabling the group to diagnose and resolve issues more efficiently. Your expertise will play a key role in keeping our historic cars performing at their very best, whether in the workshop or at events around the world.

What you'll be doing

• Manufacturing, testing and fitting wiring looms, including terminations and pin-to-pin testing
• Testing and calibrating the sensors and electronics fitted to Heritage cars, and specifying new parts where nothing suitable exists
• Diagnosing and repairing legacy systems, including Williams-developed hardware and software that went out of production decades ago
• Managing stock and equipment for the electronics group
• Supporting cars at events, working directly with the customers who own them
• Building software and algorithms over time, taking on more of that work as your skills develop
• Working with mechanics, designers and external harness manufacturers

Much of this is one-off problem solving on cars with no current documentation and no spare parts shelf. It is closer to a treasure hunt than a production line, and it needs someone who takes real pride in a finished loom.

What you'll need

Practical wiring expertise, real understanding of how sensors work, and experience calibrating them. A willingness to learn and to pass what you learn back to the team. A confident manner with customers, because at Heritage events you are the face of Williams, not a face in the garage.  Some software or programming familiarity is useful, and there is room to build it here.

Travel that is real but managed, with event rotation shared across the group rather than loaded onto one person. Genuine scope to move into control systems and software as you grow. Teamwork and accountability are how this group operates, because with three people there is nowhere for either to hide.

Qualifications and Experience Level:

Essential:

• Qualification or ongoing qualification in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related technical discipline (e.g., NVQ Level 3, BTEC, College Diploma, Apprenticeship, or equivalent experience).
• Practical experience in electrical assembly, wiring, or electronics gained through education, placement, apprenticeship, or industry role.
• Basic understanding of electrical principles, harness construction, and electronic components.
• Willingness and ability to travel to motorsport events as required.

Desirable:

• Experience in motorsport, automotive, aerospace, aviation, or high‑reliability engineering environments.
• Familiarity with motorsport connectors, cable types, and harnessing techniques.
• Awareness of vehicle electronics, sensors, and data systems.
• Basic IT skills, including use of PCs and common software tools.
