Job Description
  • This is an entry-level, hybrid role based in Pittsburgh, PA. Work is primarily remote, but the successful candidate must live in the Pittsburgh area and attend monthly on-site meetings.
  • The Junior AI Engineer will work in the innovation and platform architecture space, helping to create reference implementations, explore emerging and cutting-edge technology, and set standards and best practices.
  • The candidate will take part in both AI engineering and data engineering work alongside experienced engineers and architects, with the opportunity to work across Databricks, Google Cloud Platform, and other platforms.
  • This position is designed for a candidate with 0–2 years of experience who has a strong foundation in Python, data, and AI agents, and who is ready to grow into a professional engineer.
Key Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in and contribute to:
  • Designing, building, and deploying AI-enabled applications and agentic workflows that give business users grounded answers from enterprise data.
  • Building and tuning retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) solutions, including chunking strategy, embedding generation, and vector search.
  • Testing accuracy and refining natural language generative AI solutions, including prompt and instruction revision.
  • Curating source data into retrieval- and agent-ready form, working alongside data engineers on the transformations a solution requires.
  • Data engineering work that supports AI and data solutions.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into technical specifications and communicating technical concepts clearly to varied audiences.
  • Assisting the team in evaluating and recommending models, tools, and platforms, and staying current on technology trends.
  • Creating reference implementations, exploring emerging technology, and helping set standards and best practices.
What we are looking for:
This role requires both technical aptitude and strong communication. We’re looking for someone who genuinely loves this technology and has the capacity to learn it deeply: writing and testing code, understanding how systems are architected, and working through the complexity and frustration that come with emerging, still-maturing tools. Just as important, you can communicate clearly and confidently with technical and business audiences. We don’t expect years of experience. Our team has a strong track record of developing junior engineers into successful professionals, and we will invest in the right person. We do expect the curiosity, aptitude, and drive to make the leap from academic or personal projects to professional engineering.
  • Outstanding communication skills: well-spoken, outgoing, and comfortable engaging with technical and business audiences.
  • Smart, curious, and eager to learn.
  • Self-sufficient when needed, while understanding the junior nature of the role and taking direction well.
  • Able to work both on a team and independently, balance multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related discipline.
  • 0–2 years of experience. Internships, co-ops, academic projects, and personal projects count toward this experience.
  • Outstanding communication skills; well-spoken and outgoing.
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Understanding of data pipelines, relational data, and modern data stores.
  • Understanding of how AI agents work, how they are built, and agent architecture, with hands-on agent development experience.
  • Adept at using generative AI to rapidly understand problems and prototype development work.
Preferred Qualifications :
  • SQL and understanding of relational data.
  • Exposure to retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), including embeddings, chunking, and vector search.
  • Exposure to Databricks, Google Cloud Platform, or another cloud data platform.
  • Experience with natural-language-to-data interfaces.
