Quick overview
Job description
At E Source, we help utilities make sense of complexity in a rapidly changing landscape, and we’re looking for a Lead Analyst for our Technology Assessment Service (TAS) to help shape how that impact shows up in the world.
E Source is a research, data/analytics, and technology focused professional services firm focused exclusively on the utility industry in the US and Canada. We help utilities target and serve their customers more effectively, enhance and optimize their grid, and leverage operating best practices and technologies to manage their business more effectively. Headquartered in Texas, we have 450+ employees across the US and Canada. Learn more at www.esource.com
As a lead analyst, you’ll serve as a client-facing subject-matter expert on energy-efficiency, electrification, distributed energy resource (DER), and demand-flexibility technologies—evaluating deemed savings, whether the technology is a cost-effective measure for demand-side management (DSM) and DER programs, and how utilities might incorporate the tech into future prescriptive or custom energy-efficiency or DER programs. Using your knowledge of building systems, technical reference manuals (TRMs), and prescriptive and custom programs, you’ll develop and deliver client presentations and written deliverables that translate complex technical research into clear, actionable guidance—ensuring our work is not only relevant, but forward-thinking and decision-ready.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys digging into how technologies actually perform in the field and how that translates to good program design, brings strong judgment and a clear point of view to complex problems, and wants to contribute to work that shapes real-world decisions in the energy industry. A cover letter is required, as this position involves extensive written communication.
In this role, you will:
Serve as our in-house expert on customer-sited energy technologies and building systems—such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and heat pumps, water heating, building controls, large commercial and industrial (C&I) systems, electrification, solar, battery, and demand-response-enabled equipment—and how they integrate into utility DSM and DER programs as prescriptive and custom measures
Lead the development of TAS research, including technology assessments, reports, technical briefs, and thought leadership content; manage research projects with oversight and support from senior staff, setting clear expectations, tracking timelines, and raising issues and dependencies early
Serve as a primary subject-matter expert for Ask E inquiries on efficiency, electrification, and DER technologies—scoping requests, setting clear expectations with clients, and applying rapid technical judgment to complex and high-priority requests
Gather and critically evaluate research from primary and secondary sources—including interviews, technical literature, and in-depth reading—validate sources, weigh the strength of the evidence, and synthesize key findings into content that audiences of varying technical skill can easily understand
Create data-driven, action-oriented content for reports, articles, technical briefs, webinars, and in-person events
Coordinate collaborative technical deliverables and presentation-development processes across research, market research, and data production teams as needed, providing direction to Associate Analysts and Analysts and ensuring analysis, reporting, and presentations meet quality standards
Lead research quality assurance and contribute to process improvements that strengthen research workflows, data quality, and the consistency of client deliverables
Engage with utility clients through advisory calls, workshops, customized briefings, and occasional on-site meetings
Partner with the TAS Product Manager by providing technical input on TAS strategy, research priorities, and content roadmap
Support business development by contributing to proposals, identifying client needs, and highlighting emerging technology trends
Mentor and coach junior analysts on research quality, client delivery, and subject-matter expertise
Lead sessions at the E Source Forum and represent E Source as a subject-matter expert at industry conferences and events
You’re likely a great fit if you:
Have demonstrated depth in several customer-sited technology areas, with particularly strong expertise in building systems such as HVAC, heat pumps, water heating, building envelopes, controls, refrigeration, and motors across residential, commercial, and large C&I end uses, plus familiarity with electrification, renewables, and demand-response systems
Have working knowledge of how utility programs estimate savings and demand impacts—including baselines, measure definitions, deemed savings, TRMs, prescriptive and custom program approaches, field evaluations, cost-effectiveness inputs, and the limitations of available performance data
Enjoy conducting interviews, reading dense technical documents, and distilling complex material into clear, actionable communication
Bring exceptional writing, verbal, and analytical skills—E Source differentiates itself through readable, clear, and concise reports that provide actionable advice to utility clients
Enjoy public speaking, presenting, and engaging verbally with clients on technical topics
Bring humility and curiosity—you know there are things you don’t know, and that energizes you
Work well across disciplines and proactively seek feedback, advice, and support from your team
Prioritize effectively across planned research and unplanned client needs, take initiative, and follow through on commitments
Bring creativity and openness and aren’t afraid to share ideas for how we might do things differently
And even better if you:
Have experience with electric or gas utility DSM or DER programs
Have worked with or around utilities, regulators, manufacturers, research organizations, or consultants in the energy industry
Have presented at industry conferences or published technical content
Have a proven ability to operate as a subject-matter expert and thought leader in client-facing environments
Have experience mentoring or coaching junior staff
Experience and Skills to Qualify Include:
Typically, an advanced degree with four or more years of relevant professional experience in energy-efficiency technology research, engineering, utility program design, or a closely related field, or a bachelor’s degree with commensurate professional experience
Relevant fields of study include engineering, building science, environmental science, energy policy, or a related discipline; education and experience are guidelines rather than automatic disqualifiers for hiring or advancement
Strong written communication skills; a cover letter is required with your application
At E Source, you’ll work alongside people who are thoughtful, curious, and deeply knowledgeable about utility and energy systems. We value clarity over jargon, substance over flash, and collaboration over ego. You’ll have the opportunity to grow your skills, contribute to meaningful work, and help shape a company that plays a real role in how the energy future unfolds.
What you can expect
Excellent insurance options, including medical, dental, and vision plans; company-paid life insurance; company-paid long- and short-term disability insurance; medical and dependent-care flexible spending plans, and paid parental leave.
A flexible time off (FTO) policy that provides paid time away from work, approved by your manager, while ensuring business needs, workload commitments, and appropriate coverage are maintained.
A 401(k) plan with a 3% employer match.
The budgeted salary for this position is $91,000–$123,000 USD + annual bonus. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience.
This role will be remote, with occasional travel for industry events and utility member meetings.
Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the US or Canada. We’re unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of employment visas or Labour Market Impact Assessments (Cdn) at this time.
