The Next Gen Risk Ecosystem (NGRE) initiative is focused on advancing PayPal s risk systems to strengthen platform trust, drive sustainable growth, and maintain a competitive edge through modernization and innovation.

We are seeking a Java Developer to join the Partnership Risk Engineering team. This role is ideal for a hands-on engineer passionate about scalable system design, cloud-native development, and intelligent automation.

Backend Software Engineer Java & Python
We are seeking an experienced Backend Software Engineer with strong hands-on development experience in both Java and Python. This role will focus on designing, building, and supporting scalable backend applications, APIs, microservices, and distributed systems.
The ideal candidate is a true backend engineer who has used Java and Python in production environments and is comfortable working across both technology stacks.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain scalable backend applications and services using Java and Python.
  • Build and enhance RESTful APIs, microservices, and distributed backend systems.
  • Develop production-quality Java applications using Spring Boot/Spring Framework.
  • Develop backend services, automation, APIs, and data-processing components using Python.
  • Work with relational and NoSQL databases to design efficient data models and queries.
  • Integrate backend services with internal systems, third-party APIs, and cloud-based platforms.
  • Troubleshoot performance, scalability, and production issues.
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code and participate in code reviews.
  • Collaborate with engineering, architecture, DevOps, product, and QA teams throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Support CI/CD pipelines, containerized environments, and cloud deployments.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of backend software development experience.
  • Strong hands-on professional development experience with Java AND Python.
  • Strong Java experience with Spring Boot, Spring Framework, REST APIs, and microservices.
  • Strong Python development experience building backend applications, services, APIs, or data-processing solutions.
  • Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and distributed systems.
  • Experience with SQL and relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle.
  • Experience with Git and modern software development practices.
  • Experience writing unit and integration tests.
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, and software design principles.
  • Experience troubleshooting and optimizing production backend applications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with Kafka or other event-driven/messaging technologies.
  • Experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB, DynamoDB, or Cassandra.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI.
  • Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum engineering environments.
Key Candidate Profile
We are specifically looking for candidates who have recent, hands-on coding experience in both Java and Python. Candidates whose experience is primarily Java with only basic Python scripting or primarily Python with limited Java exposure will not be the right fit.
