Quick overview
Job description
Job Summary
The Electronics Engineering Technician will provide hands-on technical support to the engineering team in the development, assembly, testing, and verification of electronic hardware and embedded systems. This role involves assembling and modifying prototype circuits, performing initial hardware testing, troubleshooting electronic assemblies, and gathering test data to support product development. The technician will also maintain laboratory equipment, develop test setups, and ensure all engineering activities are properly documented to facilitate the transition of designs from development to production.
Key Responsibilities
- Assemble, modify, repair, and rework prototype PCBs and electrical wiring harnesses, including through-hole and fine-pitch surface-mount components.
- Conduct initial board power-up, hardware verification, and troubleshooting using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, digital multimeters, bench power supplies, and programming/debugging tools such as JTAG.
- Execute functional, environmental, and product verification tests according to established procedures and engineering test specifications.
- Develop, assemble, and maintain test fixtures, wiring assemblies, cables, and laboratory test stations.
- Investigate hardware failures, identify potential causes, and collaborate with engineers to support corrective actions and root-cause investigations.
- Maintain detailed records of testing activities, hardware modifications, repair work, assembly instructions, and updates to engineering drawings, schematics, and bills of materials.
- Verify prototype and production builds against approved engineering documentation and identify any inconsistencies or design-related issues.
- Coordinate with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and external suppliers to address component-related concerns and assembly challenges.
- Ensure laboratory instruments, tools, and test equipment are properly maintained, calibrated, and ready for use.
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree in Electronics Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience with at least two years of relevant hands-on work.
- Demonstrated ability to operate electronic test equipment and perform soldering, desoldering, and PCB rework. Familiarity with IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 standards is an advantage.
- Ability to interpret electronic schematics, PCB assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, and bills of materials (BOMs).
- Strong knowledge of electronic circuit troubleshooting and component-level fault identification.
- Good technical writing, recordkeeping, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively alongside engineering personnel.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with basic scripting, test data collection, or data-logging applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with microcontroller-based or FPGA development boards, including device programming, configuration, and debugging using manufacturer-specific software.
- Exposure to high-speed digital circuits, power management systems, or automotive electronic applications.
- Understanding of common communication protocols such as SPI, I²C, and UART.
- Basic programming or automation experience using Python, shell scripts, or similar tools.
- Previous experience working within ISO 9001 or IATF 16949 quality management systems.
- Familiarity with PCB layout and design software, such as KiCad or Altium Designer, including the ability to review layouts and perform basic modifications.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong attention to detail and a systematic approach to assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision while contributing effectively to cross-functional engineering teams.
- Good organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to handle multiple assignments and meet project milestones.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving technical issues.
- Commitment to maintaining workplace safety, product quality, and established engineering procedures.
Physical and Work Requirements
- Ability to perform extended periods of hands-on work at an electronics laboratory bench, including tasks requiring microscopes or other magnification equipment.
- Ability to lift and handle equipment or materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Willingness to work occasional overtime or adjusted schedules based on engineering development, testing, and production support requirements.
