Hybrid WORKING
Location: Cambridge, East of England - United Kingdom Type: Permanent
An innovative cyber security technology business is seeking talented Software Engineers specialising in C++ or Rust to help develop next-generation network security products protecting some of the world's most critical digital infrastructure.
The team designs and develops advanced hardware-based security solutions, including data diodes and cross-domain technologies, which help organisations protect sensitive networks and control the secure transfer of information between different security domains.
Working within a highly skilled engineering team, the successful candidate will contribute to the development of security-critical software used in demanding environments across Defence, National Security, Energy and the wider public sector.
This is an opportunity for both junior and experienced engineers to work on technically challenging projects, develop their expertise in low-level programming and network security, and contribute to products where reliability, performance and software quality are paramount.
Key Responsibilities
As a Software Engineer, the successful candidate will:
  • Design, develop and maintain high-quality software for advanced network security products.
  • Build reliable, efficient and maintainable applications using modern C++ or Rust.
  • Contribute to software development across Linux-based systems, embedded platforms and security-focused technologies.
  • Apply rigorous software engineering practices to produce clean, testable and robust code.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical discussions and collaborative software design.
  • Work within an Agile engineering environment, contributing to continuous improvement across development processes.
  • Apply test-driven development (TDD) and automated testing techniques to improve software quality.
  • Collaborate with other engineers through pair programming and group programming.
  • Investigate complex technical problems and develop effective engineering solutions.
  • Share technical knowledge and contribute to the team's collective expertise.
  • Support the development of existing products while helping shape the next generation of network security technologies.
  • Where appropriate, contribute to customer-facing activities, technical support and other areas of a growing technology business.
Essential Skills & Experience
The ideal candidate will have approximately 2-5 years of software engineering experience, gained through relevant employment, supported by a relevant degree or equivalent practical experience.
Candidates should demonstrate experience in some of the following areas:
  • Modern C++ and the Standard Template Library (STL), or Rust.
  • Python programming and scripting.
  • Linux application development.
  • Bare-metal programming, embedded software or real-time operating systems.
  • Cloud application development.
  • Network security and secure communications.
  • Software design, implementation, testing and maintenance.
Candidates do not need to possess every skill listed. The team is interested in engineers with strong programming fundamentals, a willingness to learn and the ability to develop expertise across different technologies.
Desirable Technical Experience
Experience in any of the following areas would be particularly beneficial:
  • Linux platform bring-up and low-level systems development.
  • Embedded software engineering and hardware-software integration.
  • Real-time systems and network protocols.
  • Network security architecture and security-focused software development.
  • Cloud-based applications and services.
  • Developing software for environments with complex security requirements.
  • Automated testing, continuous integration and modern development workflows.
The team works across a variety of programming languages and technology stacks, offering engineers the opportunity to broaden their technical knowledge and contribute to different areas of product development.
Personal Attributes
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
  • A strong commitment to software quality and continuous improvement.
  • An enthusiasm for collaborative engineering and knowledge sharing.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and technical challenges.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.
  • An interest in modern software development practices, including TDD, code reviews and pair programming.
  • Curiosity and a willingness to learn new technologies and engineering techniques.
  • A desire to build software that addresses real-world security challenges.
Security Clearance
Candidates must be eligible to obtain UK Security Clearance.
The role involves developing technologies for security-sensitive environments, making eligibility for the relevant clearance process an essential requirement.
What's on Offer?
The successful Software Engineer will benefit from:
  • The opportunity to develop technology that protects critical digital infrastructure.
  • Exposure to advanced cyber security, embedded systems and network security engineering.
  • Work on technically challenging projects across Defence, Security, Energy and the public sector.
  • A competitive salary, pension and bonus scheme.
  • Hybrid working arrangements.
  • Flexible healthcare plans for employees and their families.
  • Competitive annual leave allowances.
  • Ongoing training, professional development and clear career progression pathways.
  • A collaborative engineering culture focused on learning, quality and technical excellence.
  • Team events and a range of interest-based clubs covering activities such as music, film, yoga and podcasts.
