Salesforce Commerce Cloud - Lead Engineer

Remote position

Job Description:

Salesforce Commerce Cloud - Lead Engineer

Deliver complex Salesforce B2C Commerce enhancements, including retail shopping sites and supporting applications. Take independent ownership of feature implementation, technical analysis, integration troubleshooting, and code quality while helping other engineers deliver reliable changes.

Work within the development pod under the Senior Technical Lead, partnering with Customer engineering and product teams, QA, integration owners, and site reliability engineering (SRE). Serve as the technical point of contact for an assigned project or workstream, while the Technical Lead retains overall pod delivery and escalation accountability.

Key responsibilities

  • Own complex features: Translate product requirements into technical tasks, implementation options, estimates, dependencies, and acceptance criteria. Take assigned features from discovery through development, QA support, deployment, and operational handover.
  • Develop across architectures: Implement SFRA storefront components, Business Manager extensions where needed, jobs, services, and integrations. Maintain the legacy pipeline application and understand the existing partner framework before changing shared behavior.
  • Resolve integration issues: Trace data across SFCC and connected systems, validate service contracts, and investigate mapping, inventory, pricing, loyalty, and order defects. Engage the relevant system owners with clear evidence and proposed corrective actions.
  • Review and mentor: Review peer changes for correctness, maintainability, security, and performance. Guide less experienced developers, explain implementation choices, and share reusable patterns and diagnostic techniques.
  • Contribute to modernization: Participate in Storefront Next proof-of-concept activities, React development, and Contentful discovery or integration work as assigned. Document findings, dependencies, and migration risks for the Technical Lead.
  • Maintain delivery visibility: Provide realistic estimates and timely updates, surface blockers early, and explain deviations from commitments. Own the technical details of assigned work without waiting for every step to be directed. Provide technical guidance for assigned workstreams, review implementation approaches, and proactively identify delivery dependencies and risks.
  • AI Assisted Engineering: Leverage approved AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity in coding, debugging, documentation, and unit testing. Validate AI-generated code and recommendations for correctness, security, and maintainability. Adopt engineering best practices and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Required experience and technical capabilities

  • 7+ years of overall software development experience, with hands-on experience developing and maintaining Salesforce B2C Commerce Cloud applications.
  • SFCC delivery experience: Substantial hands-on experience delivering and supporting production Salesforce B2C Commerce solutions, including independent ownership of complex changes and technical collaboration across teams.
  • SFRA engineering: Strong knowledge of cartridges and cartridge paths, controllers, models, ISML templates, hooks, platform scripting, reusable components, and customization patterns. Ability to navigate a partner-built framework and widget layer on SFRA.
  • Legacy pipelines: Ability to read, troubleshoot, and maintain pipeline-based applications, understand application branches, and assess the impact of a change on established customer-care workflows.
  • Business Manager: Practical command of products and variants, catalogs, price books, inventory, promotions, coupons, content, site preferences, and jobs. Distinguish configuration issues from code defects.
  • Jobs and integrations: Build and maintain scheduled jobs, imports, exports, feeds, and service integrations. Diagnose failures and data consistency issues; understand SCAPI and OCAPI capabilities as applicable to the implementation.
  • JavaScript and web skills: Strong JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, and CSS/SASS skills for responsive storefront development, browser diagnostics, and component-based implementation.
  • Email and content: Maintain Mustache email templates and component-driven content. Experience with ReactJS, TypeScript, and relevant modernization technologies is preferred, not mandatory.
  • APIs and diagnostics: Use Postman, browser developer tools, network traces, application logs, and environment comparisons to isolate failures. Validate REST requests, responses, data mappings, and error handling before escalating.
  • Version and release control: Use GitLab branches, merge requests, peer reviews, and the existing build and deployment process. Maintain traceability between stories, changes, configurations, and releases.

Retail domain knowledge (nice to have)

Understand the customer journey from product discovery through purchase and order confirmation. Apply working knowledge of pricing, inventory, promotions, coupons, payments, tax, shipping, rewards, subscriptions, cancellations, fulfillment, and customer communications when implementing or validating changes. Learn the relevant system dependencies rather than treating each ticket as an isolated code change.

Quality and operational responsibilities

  • Design for verification: Agree edge cases, integration coverage, and data needs with QA before implementation. Add appropriate developer tests and resolve findings with evidence of the fix and its regression impact.
  • Enable automation: Collaborate with QA on in-sprint Playwright and TypeScript coverage. Support reproducible test data and investigate failures; QA execution and automation planning remain with the QA Lead.
  • Support performance: Help interpret JMeter results, investigate slow transactions and service calls, and improve logging and performance. Use Datadog where available to connect observed symptoms with application behavior.
  • Own release tasks: Participate in rotating release duties and production verification under the Technical Lead. Prepare configuration and deployment notes, recovery steps, and support documentation for assigned features.
  • Resolve production defects: Investigate staging and production incidents, propose safe fixes, and support root-cause analysis. Explain impact clearly, escalate promptly when needed, and complete follow-up actions.

Preferred qualifications

  • Relevant experience: Managed services, sustaining engineering, production incidents, or phased eCommerce modernization. Salesforce B2C Commerce Developer certification is preferred.
  • Modern storefront and tools: TypeScript, ReactJS, and Astound Framework (or comparable partner-built SFCC extension framework) experience preferred. Familiarity with Datadog, JMeter, Postman, and related diagnostic tools is beneficial.
  • AI-assisted engineering: Familiarity with GitHub Copilot or equivalent tools is preferred; apply independent review and validation to all AI-generated outputs.

Nice to Have

  • React Native; Node.js / Next.js; Contentful / headless commerce; Salesforce Storefront Next (PWA Kit).

Working expectations

  • Independently manage assigned workstreams, communicate directly with product and engineering partners, and coach colleagues.
  • Coordinate scope or priority changes with the Technical Lead rather than making unilateral changes to pod commitments.
  • Learn the existing implementation while contributing to roadmap delivery.
  • Communicate status, risks, and completed work clearly. Support sprint and monthly reporting through accurate updates on delivery, defects, improvements, and any evidenced AI productivity gains.
